I almost applied for a reading position there and my mom said it isn't a great area...I googled it and saw that it is by bayport...

I don't work there but my student teaching professor was an assistant superintendent there (back in 03-04).
He was very honest - it is a rough district at times due to the transient nature of the population. The district encompasses the largest homeless shelter on LI, so that will also present you with a unique set of challenges.
With such a strong push towards testing and evaluating teachers via testing, it is going to be a very challenging district to work in.

thanks...I was excessed from a pretty challenging district as well. I would just love to be back in the classroom

I interviewed there and I will always remember that they had a student graph on the wall graphing the number of students at the school by month. Sept had close to 200 and Dec and Jan were under 100.
I would like to imagine that the kids go to a relative's house for the holidays and are out of the shelter?
