I don't have a problem with this. It's totally optional (unlike the baggage fees), so if you don't want to pay, you don't have to, and if you want something "extra", you can pay the $10. I think it's a great idea.

I think its ridiculous - they should just start assigning seats like the other airlines. Why should I have to pay $100 EXTRA just to ensure that my family gets to sit together?

ITA...I HATE Southwest for this reason. We fly them a lot to Florida and its great to be able to fly out of Islip, but I find the whole process soooo stressful. I dont understand why they dont assign seats.

I agree.
There was another low cost carrier that did this (they weren't around too long).

I love choosing your seats on Southwest.
But this charge will make it harder to get the seats you want. Esp if you have a large family, too much extra money.
