Space Heater - or a Better Option?
My master bedroom is FREEZING - it juts out of the house and has a crawl space below and the attic above. I'm also pretty sure that when it was added on, it wasn't insulated well.
My DH and I are thinking about getting a space heater for when we're sleeping - but of course we've heard so many bad things about them.
Are space heaters still considered unsafe? (There would be no movement or anything near it - but we would be SLEEPING!)
Is there a better option to heat the entire room?
TIA

You can get good ones. We have one from HD that looks like baseboard heating. It has a remote and is programmable. It also has auto shut-off if the vents get covered (like if it tips or something falls on it)
The stereotypically unsafe ones are the kerosene type ones that have open heating elements.

Why not Reinsulate? We have a Canterlever(overhang) in our bedroom and it was freezing. We put in better insulation and it is fine.

I was going to suggest this as well...seems like a better solution than a space heater...

Re: Space Heater - or a Better Option?
We had the same problem when moved into our place - woke up one morning and it was 52 degrees in there!
We used JC Homecare for insulation - they do the blow-in insulation and also added some of the regular batting. Turns out that the attic renovation had virtually no insulation at all between the knee walls and the crawl space.
It helped a lot, but we also had inadequet baseboard heat up there. If you have baseboard you might want to consider adding the insulation and extending the baseboard.
PM me if you want the info on JC Homecare. I don't have it handy but I can find it.

Re: Space Heater - or a Better Option?
How much does it cost to reinsulate? Do they tear up the walls and stuff?
We have central heat, but only 1 register in our bedroom. The other is a heat return.

Re: Space Heater - or a Better Option?
The blow-in insulation is done from the outside if it's vinyl siding. They pull up a piece of the siding, drill a hole in the side to insulate, then plug the hole and replace the siding. You wouldn't even know they'd been there. Only thing is if there are any gaps on the inside (like around the windows) then you might get some blow in. Not sure what they do if it's a brick house. I think it cost us about $900 when we did the family room which is a converted 1-car garage. The upstairs half of a farm ranch ran us a bit more - maybe $1200 but that included some rolled insulation in the eaves and also installation of an attic fan.

Re: Space Heater - or a Better Option?
We have Hydro-Sil (permanent) heaters in both our DC's rooms because our heat system is very inefficient. It gives off a nice even heat, but it can get costly (just like any electric space heater.)
