Nope. My mom and dad each had their own "look" and tone of voice that made us stop in our tracks. My dad was abused as a kid and wanted to stop that cycle.

Rarely. The worst punishment was my parents telling us they were disappointed in us. I think we would have all rather been spanked.

I used to get whacked with the wooden spoon and screamed at by my mother. I have some memories of my dad hanging a belt on his doorknob but I cannot recall him ever using it. I grew up respecting my father. My mother is a wackado and do not plan to use spanking in rearing our children.

I was very handsy and also a yeller up to about 4 yrs ago..... I've gotten loads better.
Soooooo - I will definitely spank my kids but no belt or other weapon (wooden spoon, hairbrush, etc). And I will try not to raise my voice. It doesn't accomplish much.
Same here. I got wooden paddles (you know the toy with the ball on the rubberband stapled to the wooden paddle?) spanked and smacked and lots of yelling. My yelling has gotten so much better and I know I will be different that way than my parents were to me and my sister.

in my entire childhood I was spanked a total of 2 times (my sisters never were). But i DEFINITELY had it coming! One time I remember, the other I don't (I was only 3). But I do think my parents were right in doing it especially now that I look back at the kind of stubborn child I was. That was the only way that I learned, so I'm glad they stopped me from becoming a little brat. lol. I do think that those minor spankings most certainly taught me a lesson, helping create the marvelous person you see before you.  haha

yes, and for this reason i am 100% completely AGAINST EVER spanking my children.
i am very pro-discipline, but i think spanking is barbaric and i will NEVER spank my children after what i went through

dh and i will not spank either. among my many reasons not to, i just can't imagine hitting my child and having that be a memory they have of me...

besides the above, ive also had everything from wooden spoons to broom sticks broken across my rear end... not to mention the Palmolive taste i still cant get rid of! to this day i wont buy it!

my mother was very strict.
i think her being strict - and not just with a spanking if i deserved it - but with how my parents raised us in general, being tough, having high expectations from us made us who we are. i turned out just fine... if i do say so, myself. i'm big on respect.

I was really hit alot.. And I have a brother and 2 sisters and we all hit eachother ,,, It was not a good scene.. I dont think I ever want to hit my DD because of what went on in my house..

I was spanked w/pants down and I got the belt a lot. My brother always got a wooden paddle made just for him and they used to carve his name in it everytime he got it. 
I still think it was abuse forget about the verbal!

My mother had a wooden spoon that she used for her sauce. For some reason, it was always in her hand at the right time It didn't happen often.

very, very rarely, and it was never a full spanking, but more like one or two smacks on the butt. Everytime it happened I deserved it and it was NEVER done out of anger.
I will *probably* dish out the same kind of punishment to my kids when/if it is ever absolutely necessary. I hope it never will come to that, but I'm realistic.

I can't remember being spanked, but I remember getting slapped as a teenager for something particularly fresh.
My brothers, far worse than spanking at the hands of my SD.

I completly agree. I think spanking a child is an adult temper tantrum and abusive. Hitting with a belt or spoon seems insane to me and I was hit with a belt.
I also try not to yell and scream when dealing with my kids, it does nothing but escalate a situation. Being stern and calm is way more effective.

ITA....i was hit and yelled at, cursed at, and it was out of anger that was taken out on me...it disgusts me to think about it....i don't ever remember getting hugged or kissed by my parents just being punished....i don't have children yet but i already made a promise to myself that i will never take my anger and frustration out on them and i will NOT lay my hands on them to hurt them physically or scare them...

Yes, by my mother but occassionally and we deserved it. A ton by my step father - this was definetely abusive, pants down with a belt for anything no matter how small.
Having said that I will hit DS for a serious reason and only with my hand.
