Speaking of Christmas shopping.....I have been Inspi(red)

I saw an add for the Gap Red tshirts they now have in Gapkids and Baby Gap and it got me to thinking...

I'd like to take the extra time and care in my shopping this year to buy products/gifts for people that give back to someone/thing somewhere.

I am just wondering how this would fly with those I give gifts to....I know what I am thinking by giving these gifts, but not sure the sentiment would translate.

I am not talking donations in lieu of gifts, but things people would like/need/use that also promote awareness and/or provide financial support to different causes both hear and far (ie, the inspi(red) curious George for my godchildren or a gift certificate to a restaurant that participates in City Harvest etc.)

does anyone do this? any ideas and sugggestions are appreciated.

I mean, what better way to put the real sentiment of Christ back into Christmas, no?

Thats a good idea.
Another way to help, but not necessarily buy FROM a charity, is buy from iGive and they give a percentage of your purchases to a charity of your choice. It doesn't let the receiver know what you're doing, but you will know.

I think it's perfect. I would love the (RED) shirts for my kids. It's the perfect opportunity to spark some conversation.

Re: Speaking of Christmas shopping.....I have been Inspi(red)

I think it's a great idea.

And now is a good time to shop if you wanted to buy something for breast cancer awareness. There are so many pink products out there.

My husband wears an "Until There's a Cure" bracelet everyday. He can't go without it. He's actually had it for many, many years. It's for AIDS research and awareness.

There are so many good causes out there, that I think you'll find your options for gifts are endless.

It's a great idea, but I'd urge you to research the products and/or the charity you select to support.

You can research charities on Charity Navigator to see how much really goes toward the cause and how much is being spent on administration, fundraising, etc. I used to work for a national non-profit and it was an eye-opener to see how much of the donations went to just running the organization. Some non-profits are better than others at streamlining costs and getting goods and services donated.

I know that earlier this year there were some accusations that the Red products weren't generating any funds for the cause after all the costs to promote and the fees that the celebs wanted. Bono came out and denied that he was paid a fee, but I'm not sure about the other celebs and companies involved.

I also wanted to say that just because an organization has high costs to run doesn't make it a bad charity. For example, since the ASPCA runs shelters in addition to raising awareness on animal issues, their operating costs are going to be much higher than PETA's, who is all about animal cruelty awareness. But both are great organizations.

thanks. this is great advice.

I also happen to spearhead the annual charity campaign we have here in my office, so I am pretty good about that...but it's great advice to anyone interested.

and I heart BONO. forever. the end LOL

I didn't know that celebs were getting paid to be involved. I'd love to know who, b/c I honestly think it's disgusting.

a bit of info on the Red accusations

Re: Speaking of Christmas shopping.....I have been Inspi(red)

every year I give my immediate family and my aunts a Christmas ornament where a part of the proceeds go to a charity/cause. Last year, each ornament equaled the donation of a bowl of dog food to a local shelter. The year before each ornament equaled the planting of one tree in the rainforest. i haven't found my ornament this year - but my cause is usually animals or the environment.

ETA: The bowls of food was throught the Animal Rescue Site Click Me

I got my rainforest ornaments at Plow and Hearth Click Me

I really like this idea. Which organization plants trees in the rain forest?

Ooo I never realized you can buy gifts through the Hunger site, or breast cancer site, etc. I think thats where I'll be doing a lot of my shopping this year.

Thanks for the ideas.

Re: Speaking of Christmas shopping.....I have been Inspi(red)

i try to make as many of my gifts as possible, but i do know that not all of my gifts can be made.

this is def a wonderful way to spend your dollars. i've given some "charity" gifts in the past, but never saw so many wonderful things and so much variety before.

thank you all for sharing all your resources. i'll def be shopping with a conscience this year.

I thought I'd add this for those that are looking for gifts that give back...

I read about this cookbook in Victoria magazine:

Park Avenue Potluck
Recipes from NY's Savviest Hostesses
$28.00 + tax/shipping

Sales from the book raise money for Sloane Kettering.

MSKCC site

You can also preorder through Amazon for less, but I wonder if the same amt of $$ will go to Sloane?
