Speaking of race, something DH and I talked about over dinner tonight
Obama was raised by his white mother with a lot of help from her parents (obviously white). so we were wondering why he is referred to as African American. is it b/c he looks more black than white?
and what if he married a white woman?
just some mindless dinner chatter but I am curious nonetheless.

it's b/c he looks black.
my uncles wife is half white, half black just like Obama, but has white skin and features (but her hair is more of a mixed texture)
no one ever thinks of her as African American.
she would never be described as African American...even though a full half of her IS.
it's just our way of categorizing..for better or for worse.

Re: Speaking of race, something DH and I talked about over dinner tonight
interesting. I had a similar conversation with my mother last night.
My son is Puerto Rican.
I told my mother if Barak wins it will send a nice message to my son that he can be whatever he wants, no racial boundries.
My mother says, silly...he will always know he can be whatever he wants to be.
God forbid, something happens to DH and I move home. My white parents and I raise Josh.
If Josh runs for president, he will still be a hispanic president, even though he was raised by white people.
People would say no hispanic president, he will probably let illegal mexicans come and stay.
she hung up. she's voting for McCain.
I think even if Obama married white, he would still be seen as a black man.

Self-identification, I guess?
Take Derek Jeter. Do you think of him as white? African-American? or just plain Derek Jeter?

I *think* technically if one of your grandparents is African American you would consider your self African American.

My son, since he will have a Hispanic surname, will be looked at as a hispanic - doesnt matter if I'm white; his father isnt

I know they say that, but check this out...
these two boys are my uncles kids...their mom is half black.
do you think ANYONE would consider them African American. what do you think the NAACP would say to them if they knocked on their door
the older one is my godson...the younger one is the ring loser

I think it's how he identifies himself.
Thankfully the days of quadroon, etc. are long gone.

Lets be HONEST... it REALLY depends on who that person identifies with.. we're all educated (most of us) we KNOW that...
but unfortunately... in societies eyes, if you are mulatto, and look more african american... then in society's eyes-- you are AA. And I also think that many americans don't even know the difference btwn AA & Caribbean (SADLY) Unless, of course you want to educate them... but IMO I don't feel as though that person SHOULD have to educate them, you know?

Honestly - and don't flame me here - I think he refers to himself as black because he's playing an angle during campaigning. He thinks he'll get more press and probably more votes that way. Personally, I see him as bi-racial as that is his heritage.

Thank You! Im "bi-racial" and probably would have had more respect for Obama had he acknowledged that that is in fact what he really is. I still would not have voted for him, but I would have respected him a little bit more.

That isn't true. Maybe in 1890 when the rule was enforced in the South...
