Speaking of running... knee-related...

I suffer from knee pain (in both knees, pain is not related to running) and while I've always wanted to pursue running, it has stopped me from following through for fear of injury. My regular workouts cause knee pain as it stands, can't imagine the pain sustained from running...

Anyone else have knee pain and run anyway? If you're a runner, how do you protect your knees from injury?

I would check with your dr - they may recommend a certain brace, taping method, etc.

Don't run through pain without checking with your dr first - I don't have knee pain but I ran through a "hip flexor injury" for a while - turns out it was a stress fracture and cartilage tear - I had to have surgery.

Check with your doc - I know some people can manage their knee pain with stretching & icing, and some with PT!

I agree with seeing a doctor first if you know you have knee pain. Sometimes it is a simple fix like a brace or KT Tape. I would not starting running on a bad knee before having it checked. Knees (I feel) are the worst thing to mess with!

Go see your doctor/orthopedist and find out the reason for the pain first. Could be a simple fix or something more serious that should be taken care of.

Yes I have ran through some mild pain, but only when I knew it was because I had just overdone it and with a few days off I would be fine. I was having severe pain and when it didn't go away with some rest I knew it was more serious. Turned out to be a stress fracture in my hip. Had I kept running on it I could have done some serious damage.

I don't protect my knees unfortunately and run through pain. I currently have major IT band issues in both my knees but I just do what I can and continue running, hoping it settles.

I would definitely see a doctor. Once we found out what my issue was, I started physical therapy, rolling my IT band, and icing to help the pain. Today my right IT band is in very bad shape but I still plan to run in the morning. I just deal Chat Icon
