Special Treat at the Bird Feeder

A pair of Purple Finches have been visiting my bird feeder the past couple of days. It's been such a treat.

What birds have been visiting your feeder/yard?

Greeny told me it might be a mockingbird, because it sings like 6 different songs.

It sure is mocking me

It could be a mockingbird. Does it make all different kinds of calls, one after the other?

Re: Special Treat at the Bird Feeder

Just saw your other post. Yes, it seems like a mockingbird. They annoy me. Bad to say, I know.

Wow! They are beautiful! what kind of bird food are you putting out for them?

I filled up my birdfeeder yesterday and my son and I have enjoyed watching the squirrels hanging by their tails emptying it!!!

In England we call those earlybirds singing "the dawn chorus" sounds a bit nicer!!!

Re: Special Treat at the Bird Feeder

The mix has sunflower seeds and dried berries and some other seedy-stuff.

I was shocked that I spotted those 2 - they are not common in our area anymore and they are actually in migration, moving south. Thus my "treat" comment Chat Icon

Re: Special Treat at the Bird Feeder

Finches love niger or thistle seed - you can usually buy "socks" of them at an Agway or other feed store.

Re: Special Treat at the Bird Feeder

I had a hummingbird feeder for over a year - and not ONE hummingbird.

I get chickadees and cardinals, aside from the run-of-the-mill sparrows, pidgeons, squirrels....and a woodpecker now and again. I've had a Baltimore Oriole in the past....and the cardinals usually come as a family in the spring, they are beautiful.

Today I went to Hempstead Lake State Park and saw some BEAUTIFUL birds -- I couldn't name them tho! I like to watch them but I don't know what's what . .. myabe I'll get a book.....

Re: Special Treat at the Bird Feeder

This morning I saw a red winged blackbird...

I have seen cardinals, a blue jay, sparrows, goldfinches, and what looks like the female bird in your pic Colleen...I wasn't sure what it was, I was leaning toward a Warbler, but I think that is it!

Ok, sat outside most of the day today and saw a blue jay swoop in and steal an egg from a dove's nest

so sad, but so cool!

Re: Special Treat at the Bird Feeder

Kara, the "bible" of birding is the Sibley's book. It's what I've used for ID's for years, and a lot of other people I know have it and love it. But it's too heavy to be a field guide. There are others out there for quick ID's. Chat Icon

I used to call those "Army birds" when I was a kid because it looked like they had commendations on their wings. Chat Icon

Re: Special Treat at the Bird Feeder

What pretty birds.

I wish we could put bird food out. We used to and got some beautiful cockatoos and lorikeets. Someone in our building complained and now we arent allowed to feed the birds anymore. Chat Icon

On the same day we were told this, our bird feeder magically got stolen Chat Icon

Cockatoos are known to take apart window frames and stuff so the building owner didnt want the building to get ruined, but to have our bird feeder stolen was just wrong. I think it was our neighbour.

Re: Special Treat at the Bird Feeder

That is so cool Lisa!!

For a quick, take around field guide I have Birds of New York Field Guide by Stan Tekiela. It's small - 6"x4.5".

I've had 2 pair of Baltimore Orioles in our blossoming apple tree for the past few days. Besides being gorgeous, their song is beautiful. The usual 5 Blue Jays and a couple of Tufted Titmouse are making shop in the tree too...along with the Red-Bellied Woodpecker that visits.

I love Catbirds too - usually hear them before seeing them but I love the rust spot on their under rump.

I don't see Red-Winged Blackbirds by me - but I've seen them at my MILs house. They do look like "army birds" LOL

There was a Red-tailed Hawk flying over my area - a few houses down - yesterday with a crow chasing her...

There was a Rt Hawk in my neighbor's tree last year - there must have been a Mockingbird nest in the tree b/c there was one mockingbird that was going nuts - flying in and squawking. This went on for a good 45 minutes - I thought the Mockingbird was going to have a heart attack Chat Icon then a ton of other birds came - almost to rally the mockingbird - it was cute...but sad. And oh-so-cool to have a Rt Hawk in the yard next door!!
