Speech and special ed screening at pre-school
DS's preschool is offering a screening (conducted by an outside company) for their students. The screenings are 15-20 minutes long and cost $5.
What do you think of this? DS is two and we have decided not to do it - at this time we have no concerns about his speech or learning abilities, though I suspect he might be color blind, but again - he's only two. I don't know how I'd feel if he was 3 or 4. If someone was really concerned, wouldn't they go through EI, or the school district, for free?

I dont see the harm in doing it. The school district may not have the resources to handle the volume of kids to screen. It is $5 compared to free? no difference to me.

I would do it. What have you got to lose? They are also probably trying to get business out of it.. Because if they see a need from the screening then you can use them to do the evals...

I would. There's nothing to lose. I'm a big proponent of intervening as early as possible

I would pass on it because if there is an issue with your child's learning, behavior, etc., I would think the school would already have picked up on it and let you know. Sounds like a money maker to me, albeit only $5, but still.

as an SLP, the screenings are often done by speech-lang and audiology graduate students for hours towards our licenses/CCCs. not sure why they are charing though...i've never heard of that. maybe they are using professionals.

Actually, no. These screenings are often done in the beginning of the school year. You also cannot necessarily depend on a teacher to pick up subtle speech and language delays. We now know that the earlier a delay is caught, the MUCH better prognosis there is, so how can an early screening hurt?
LB- I say go for it. When I was in grad school we often did those preschool screenings for clinical hours. It's nothing more than a quick screen of speech sound production and the ability to understand directions, label objects, etc. It's all very play-based and the kids really seemed to enjoy it. Here in MD, if a child shows a possible risk of delay, s/he is referred to the county for a more indepth evaluation IF THE PARENT WANTS IT.
