Speech Delays

Hello, I have a question re: my PDD nephew who is 3 1/2. He goes to special needs preschool and receives all of his services there (PT,OT,Speech) He has come such a long way and we are so happy! My sisters concern is that he only uses single words and really only speaks when we are asking him questions. I guess my question is should she start sign language, or try to have a therapist come to the house for added sessions or maybe something else to help him with his speech. She said she has come to terms with this and just wants to do whats best for him. I figured you all have great insight and I would appreciate all advice!!
TIA!!

Re: Speech Delays

My son is the same age and same dx. He did this too but we have an awesome home teacher who works with him so much on language and generalizing things. My son is OBSESSED with animals so if you said, what's that he'd answer a cow. So what she did was say oh it's a cow and it's brown and white and it eats grass and lives on a farm....etc.,
At first I didn't get it but now he has gotten SO much better speaking. Tell her to just try it on her own with whatever he is interested in.
GL!

Re: Speech Delays

Home services whenever you can !!!!!! (or of course at a center/agency) IMO you can get so much more out of a therapist when you are "there" (even in the waiting room). I worked in a school for years, and unfortunately, "services" aren't always as strong as they would be if they were in a more private setting.

And just like the PP said, details are really important. Details is what makes someone a good communicator. Keep expanding on the "word" your nephew says, asking him for the details. It could be just "brown dog" and then "big brown dog" etc

Sign language brings out verbal language. If your nephew can pick up sign language easily go with it !!
