speech spinoff...at 18 months

dr was okay with him saying 20 different words in his lifetime that only I had to understand.

went home, wrote down each word...came to like 22...most of them were only said once and never again.

other then mom, dad, car, truck, plane, no, boat....he doesn't say much.

now at 19 months...I feel like its still the same words.

should he be doing more? I know he just did enough to scrape by his 18 month visit.

dr did not seem too worried...I am okay waiting till 2, just want to see if its the norm?

Noah is what we call a late talker, he went to see a Speech Therapist last month, she told me that there is a correlation between early walking and late talking. She also said that if your child is delayed with speech, they will be that six months (for example) behind. Also, I would be more concerned with his sounds than his actual words.

For instance, Noah was saying "morna" instead of water and "Mindow" instead of Window. Also, he says Dirl (girl) oh my dod (god) when I took him to the ST she said instead of correcting him, ask him, Noah, is it Girl or Dirl?

To be honest, he has come along in leaps and bounds in the last month, in April of this year he was barely saying anything at all, and getting very frustrated, which prompted me to get in touch with the ST.

Janice, if he says some words, thats a good sign. There will probably be a word explosion at some point!

Ryan had a word explosion right before turning 2. I wouldn't worry just yet.

My DC is only saying about 7 words and not even using them every day.. So I am going to have her evaluated.
20 words is great..but I guess just observe and make sure he keeps learning new words and sounds..

I was shocked it added up to 22 words...most we only heard once and never again.

we don't have a hi/bye relationship at all.

the most he has ever spoken was on 4th of july during a parade, filled with trucks, cars, train

He sounds like he's doing fine. Just keep labeling objects and give him time to use his language. Use outings to build vocab like in the food store, ect. Also ask questions, "Where's your ball?" and give commands "get your ball" ect...

As long as he understands what you are saying I wouldn't worry at all.

Like if you ask him for Elmo can he get it for you? Does he resond to his name? Does he communicate his wants in other ways, like gesture?

If so, then honestly I wouldn't worry at all. I mean he is using his words purposefully, and calling you.

he points and gets anything and everything.

I am a HUGE talker, so I have taken to the back burner to pause and give him a second to try.

when we read, he points to almost everything on the page when I ask "where is this?"

That is great! I think he will get there when he is ready. It is the understanding part that is really important. Chat Icon

ETA: I have asked my son's SLP about using words once. She always tells me that it is totally normal for children to do that, and that now you know he has it, when he is ready he will use it.
