Speech therapists? When would you say its time to be evaluated?

DD is 14 months and says no words..

she babbles a lot, but no words....I think a few times she may have said dog

Should I get her evaluated? Wait till 15 months? When is the general recommendation for this?

TIA!

If at 1 year she is not saying any actual words (mama, dada, bye, up) very simple sounds, then I would get her evaluated.

Speech cannot hurt, it can only help, and if she qualifies, take full advantage of whats being offered. And if she does not qualify, then no harm done!

I still think it's a little early (I'm a speech pathologist), ESPECIALLY if she's babbling. That said, YOU have the mommy instinct so if you feel something is not right, then there is absolutely no harm in starting the EI process.Chat Icon

i totally disagree with this. many kids do not speak at 1 yrs old and it is TOTALLY normal. children develop at different rates and your dc may be more focused on her gross motor skills at this point.
if your dc is babbling with different sounds, receptively understands you, points and communicates in non-verbal ways, socially interacts, has age appropriate play skills then i'd wait till 15 months. i think it's easier to qualify at that point i believe if there are still no words.Chat Icon

I agree. I'm also a speech therapist. You may see more words/sounds coming in around 16-18 months.
