Speeding ticket Nassau county; conference tomorrow...UPDATE
I spoke to a few friends that got tickets as well, but I figured asking here would be really helpful! I got a ticket on the Seaford Oyster Bay in May. I was clocked at doing 74 in a 55. The officer was cordial, but never let me have a chance to say anything!
I was in the left lane, completely moving with traffic. I saw the patrol car inching up to enter the left lane, so I signaled, and changed lanes to the middle. There was a bit of traffic. Then he got behind me and lights-on, pulled over. I don't think it was me he clocked, because there were so many other cars around me, but there's no way to prove that.
I plead not guilty and requested a deposition from the officer. I have a "conference" tomorrow night (night?!). What am I to expect at this conference? Do I tell the story just as it happened? That's always my question about pleading not guilty...what do you actually say is the reason for your non guilt?
I just want it reduced. I'm obviously not going to get a lawyer at this point. Plus, I'm away until tomorrow morning and couldn't make those kind of calls.
So stressful!!
UPDATE: Got there just before 6, waited only 10 minutes. Got called up, she didn't even ask for my story. Told me I had a "clean record" haha and offered me 2 pts and a 'failure to signal'. I told her to shove it! Ok, j/k I took it, obviously. $150 fine + $50 surcharge, but that's cool with me. I was looking at 4 points with the speeding ticket. DH and I then went out to a nice dinner and were finally able to relax. Thanks for all the words of advice!

hmmm.. when i have plead not guilty to tickets, i usually dont get called for a "conference" i just get a date to go to the traffic court in hempstead... there all you do is go up to the lawyers & if you have low/no points & have taken care of every ticket in the past (even parking tickets) they reduce your penalty without even asking for an explianation
HTH - good luck!!

Re: Speeding ticket Nassau county; conference tomorrow...
Ok I was just there on Monday getting a ticket dismissed. So I can tell you what the deal is.
They will first call you up to speak to the DA (i guess they are district attorneys). They will offer to reduce the ticket. You can either say yes to the reduction or no.
There is no "bargaining" when you speak to the DA. You can tell them all the stories in the world about how you were in the right, it doesn't matter. It's either yes or no to accept the plea.
If you feel like you were unjustly given the ticket, then you can decline the plea and then you go see the judge and you can tell the judge your story. But of course if the judge finds you guilty, you get the full ticket slapped on you.
If you take the plea, you will still have to appear in front of the judge to just say "guilty". Then you pay your fines plus your surcharges and you go on your merry way.

The conference is the traffic court. They just use the word "conference" on the summons to appear at Hempstead.

Re: Speeding ticket Nassau county; conference tomorrow...
Oh and for a 74 in a 55, thats 19 over. They will probably reduce it to 5-10mph over. You will still have points on your license.
If you are lucky they may reduce it to a non speeding (but still moving) violation - like failure to stop at a stop sign.
But listening to all the cases, I think the DAs were still reducing speeding tickets to the guys that were 20+ over to lower speeding tickets. 19 over may get your failure to obey a traffic control device.
Oh and PSA... don't ever attempt to drive an uninsured car. Heavy fines.
One idiot and his daughter were there trying to get out of this ticket. Apparently the daughter was caught driving his daddy's car that wasn't insured. That's a $500 fine, a $1000 motor vechicle fine, and I think a YEAR license suspension for the owner of the car. The DA even said "try to get your insurance company to retro active the insurance date". LOL Wow.

Yes it's on the letter they send you if you don't appear in court on the initial date that's on the actual ticket.
I mailed in not guilty on my ticket, then they sent me this letter saying I had to appear for a conference.
I guess this letter also serves the purpose of somebody getting a partking ticket (like I did for expired inspection), but never actually receiving the ticket (maybe it blew off the windshield).

Re: Speeding ticket Nassau county; conference tomorrow...
If you get to speak to the officer beforehand (I have upstate but never got a speeding ticket on LI, so it may be different), tell him it's your first ticket, if you have no prior on your record. Ingratiate yourself, admit your mistake, don't make up lame excuses, they hear them all the time. It's better to admit your guilt to him and ask that you be given a penalty w/o points so as to save your license......and insurance!

Also, before you go in, make sure the officer wrote down everything correctly on the ticket...your license plate, lic#, etc. make sure every single thing is correct. If there is anything wrong, even one number or letter, they have to throw out the ticket.

ITA.
Also, take the plea, whatever it is, b/c if you do not, and you go to "trial" where the judge hears your story, you will most likely be found guilty.
When you take a plea, it's a plea on what you are charged with (19mph over) Even though they will reduce the infraction the fine is based on the original offense - so be prepared to pay $$$

Yup. I think the cheapest I heard them say all night was $100 + $50 surcharge. The average was like $200-250 plus a $50 surcharge.

Re: Speeding ticket Nassau county; conference tomorrow...
Thank you all for the great advice!
One of you mentioned mentioning it was my first ticket. It isn't. I got a speeding ticket about 13 years ago...a ways away, but still probably in the system somewhere, right?
I am definitely just trying to get the thing reduced. I will take the plea for sure. I'm not trying to get it dismissed. I want this over and done with. A couple of hundred bucks and 1 or 2 points would be fine for me.

I believe tickets stay in the motor vechicle system for 6-7 years then they dissapear.

I think you can still say it... I got pulled over upstate for 86 in a 55 and told the officer it was my first ticket even though I think I had one a ways back. I bargained for a lesser charge and got 3 points and a $350 fine.... That should be gone by now I hope.....
Oh and as far as the whole supporting deposition and incorrect info on the ticket thing, it doesn't always fly......I tried the SD thing with the trooper and he wasn't having it....

That doesn't make lying under oath about it a good idea - or legal.

That's why I always say "I have a clean driving record".
Which is not lying. I got a speeding ticket 10 years ago. If I go to the DMV and pay the $6 dollars for my driving record, i'll get a blank piece of paper.

good point, say you have a clean record..... And for that record, I would much rather tell an untraceable white lie to save my a$$ then have my license possibly suspended and pay a huge fine and have my insurance go up.

Good advice...clean record! I'll post when I get home tomorrow night. I still think 6pm is a little odd. I'm bringing DH with me, b/c I'm not going to be caught there alone at night.

They actually stay on your motor vehicle record for 4 years if they are unrelated to a DWI/DUI. Most insurance companies will only surcharge you for violations that occured within the past 39 months from the effective date of your policy.
