Sperm Donors... Touchy topic...
I caught part of a DAteline or 20/20 last nite. Havent watched TV in ages, and this caught my attention. Did anyone else see it ?
It's very interesting, and it's hard for me to take a stand on it either way. It's such a touchy and sensitive subject.
Sperm donors can remain anonymous, but they can also choose to be found by the children/families.
There were famliies who realized that they had used the same "sperm donor number" so their kids were half siblings! and they were raising them to grow up together and I think even calling eachother brother/sister. There were 6 siblings from 4 different famliies, who found eachother from this big website where this is a new thing now.
ONe guy was willing to meet the families/children, incase any of them had questions. I admired him for that, but also felt he must be in such an awkward position. SEEING his offspring, yet not having an emotional connection. Or maybe trying hard to not create that connection. He was a pediatrician, so children are his heart and soul ! and he and his wife are expecting their first...
I just wonder how this will play out in years to come, with this supposedly becoming the new thing (to find the family members...)
Thoughts, opinions ? I wish I had seen the whole episode.

Re: Sperm Donors... Touchy topic...
I think it's great that he is involved or at least "his" kids know who he is and that it is great that the siblings know each other. He was able to help families that otherwise may not have been able to have children I am assuming.
Did he say why he chose to donate his sperm in the first place?

HE said something very similar to what you said. Helping famliies achieve a dream that they otherwise would not have been able to do on their own.

Re: Sperm Donors... Touchy topic...
women have been giving up children for years and allowing them to connect with them. I think it's a good thing (at least when all parties agree) I think it really helps the child learn thier heritage and seriously helps with family medical history.

I agree also but I guess it seemed so different with a sperm donor starting out the process with the intent to not raise the child, whereas mothers (that give their children up for adoption), and I admire them for even being able to make such a hard decision, dont go get pregnant just to give the child up...
well then there's surrogate moms, egg donors, etc. So of course this is true for them too. I guess I jsut never thought about the sperm donor scenario. I already admire all that women do and go through, and never thought of a man going through it... if that makes sense...
thanks for sharing your thoughts

He also did it for $ for medical school. $50 a deposit. He said he did maybe 150 or more deposits!

Re: Sperm Donors... Touchy topic...
There was an article in Parents magazine about the pediatrician (if it was the same one). His wife is also a pediatric cardiologist. Ironically they had fertility problems before she was able to get pregnant.
I think it's the greatest gift you can give a couple. I admire him for being willing to help other couples out & wish there were more people like him in this world.
I think it's wonderful for the children to be able to meet a biological parent provided everyone is willing.

Re: Sperm Donors... Touchy topic...
My cousin-in-law recieved in-vitro from an anonymous donor. Through blogs, she was able to find other children that most likely are related to her twins. She has even met some of them. I think that is a pretty neat link.

Re: Sperm Donors... Touchy topic...
My BFF was inseminated by the same donor 26 times. He was a very popular donor. She got pg only once after the 13th time..my godson. She passed away 3 1/2 years ago She let it be known to all she NEVER wanted her Son to know her DH wasn't his natural father. To this day, he is 18 now, he has no idea. THat was just how she wanted it. I had mixed feelings because I was always afraid someone would slip up and he would find out and it would be a disaster. It was her choice. RIP my friend
