Spin Off - Would you wear a used diamond...
So I have my engagement ring....in a safe deposit box. I want to sell it and invest the money....just not sure if Im ready yet.
I have been advised by jewlers to sell it privately because I will get closer to the amount my ex paid for it. The stone is beautiful...2.5 almost perfect round stone.
I have already had people interested...but haven't had it in me to give it up yet....is this weird? My feeling is...Im fine with it as long as I don't know the buyers.

People do this all the time; if it's an ex...there is nothing wrong with selling it. I would bet you the person who buys it will not tell it's new wearer that it was "used."
I have a friend who sold hers when she got divorced; she felt weird, but she did enjoy the money!

I think by keeping it you're still holding on to something from your former relationship. I also think that you should do that as long as you need to. The value of a diamond only goes up - whether it goes up less/more than what you would get investing that money remains to be seen.
When you're in a different place down the line, sell it.

I agree with Barbara. I would keep it as long as you have some emotional attachment to it, but it is also an investment.
I would have no problem wearing someone else's diamonds. That's often called "estate" jewelry isn't it?

figure out how you will spend the money, get really used to the idea of having the money and spending it on said item - like a car or house down payment or whatever..thne sell it to a stranger
OR
exchange it for diamond earrings or a tennis bracelet

Im going to invest the money.....not ready to buy a home yet...Im currently renting in Manhatten. Prices are too crazy to buy a studio for 400K.
So Im going to take 1K and treat myself to this and whatever else I want.

Lots of people sell thier rings on ebay. Have you thought of doing that? The chances of you knowing your buyer are then slim to none.

I don't think there is anything wrong with selling your ring. You will probably feel better after it is gone. One less attachment that you have to your ex. The new ring you want is gorgeous. You should think about what you want for yourself and do it. Someone will definitely buy it. They know they will get your ring for a steal. Good luck!

I also have my first engagement ring from my former fiance. We were engaged for 5 years but never did get married because he got very sick & passed away. I tucked the ring away not knowing what I'd do with it. My daughter always considered him her stepdad since we were together for 8 years. My DH knows I have it still but it just stays put away.

I would not sell just yet - esp. since you are not even looking to buy a house right now.
I think overall over time Diamonds only go up in value and don't think it really means anything that you are holding on to it. Put it away somewhere safe. Its your own personal little nestegg. One day when you REALLY need the money or go buy a house THEN sell it.
Its like found money.... keep it for as long as you can!
