My cousin rents hers from the hospital (Greenwich, CT) and it cost her $25 per month. Not all hospitals rent them out, so you might want to look into that.

You don't need a pump right away. So I would just go with breastfeeding then look into a pump when your're ready to introduce expressed BM in a bottle. I had a very low milk supply so I had to have a hospital grade pump which I rented from a medical supply store for $75 a month. If you are BFing and need to go back to work and have no supply issues then a Pump in Style/Advance should be fine. If you're not going back to work and only need the occasional bottle then the Medeal Single Electric Pump should be fine for that.

Call your insurance company and ask if they will cover a breast pump rental, and if so, from which places. if they don't just go to Medela's website and put in your zip code. They will give you a ton of places. I think mine was around $75 for a medela classic. You cannot rent a Pump In Style! If anyone tries to rent you one leave the place. They are single use pumps only, which means that only one person can own and use the pump EVER. Of course a good friend, sister can lend you the pump but don't ever use one from a rental place. Someone tried to tell me that I could rent one from them- it is actually against health codes to do so.
Anyway if you have trouble you will want an LC to help you and often they rent the pumps too.
If you plan on going back to work, you can use a Pump In Style (Advance or Regular). That will work great for you. You can't really travel to and from work with it though. They weight a TON, unlike the PIS(A).

Re: spin-off on breast pumps - renting them...
I rented mine from LIJ and it was 150 for 3 months, and more each month if you did it monthly, I think 60 a month. My insurance paid for the pump, only when they were in the NICU, but all insurance is different, so it doens't hurt to call like Michele suggested.
