Re: Spin Off to Care Package for brother-

This is SUCH a WONDERFUL IDEA!!!!

I am including extra stuff for all the guys..I know one friend of Mike's doesn't get anything. He basically has no family and spent his time off with my family before their leave Chat Icon

I HATE thinking there are these men and women over there fighting for us and they have no "pick me ups".

For anyone doing this, I think you are doing an awesome thing.

And it doesn't cost much to ship really! An 11 pound package cost me about $10 last month. Not too bad!

If you can get some names from him of people who don't get things (and what they need) and pass them along, I would be interested in sending something to them. Let me know Chat Icon

I was just in a taxi and saw a program about a group who does this. They have tons of packages ready to go BUT NO $$$ TO SHIP THEM!! Can you donate to them? I'll try to find the information.

ETA: This is the charity:

Here is an article about their situation.

DH was just telling me that he saw the same thing in a cab so we checked out the website. I think it's weird that they don't say they need money to ship stuff, but they are still asking for donations of product.

Packages to Iraq can take weeks to get to the correct unit -- and then once to the correct unit, it still can take a week minimum to get to the soldier. When DH was deployed, I sent a box for him that took a month to get there. Also, mail is pretty slow getting out of Iraq, so dont be discouraged if you dont get a letter back right away. It may take some time. Chat Icon

Re: Spin Off to Care Package for brother-

Also, for those still sending care packages -- during the holiday season one of the BEST things to send is holiday decorations. These men and women are spending the holidays away from home and they miss out on all the holiday spirit. It really lifts their spirits to have some homey holiday reminders in their barracks. In a typical platoon, there are around 30 guys. Last year I sent one platoon mini stockings, a mini pre-lit tree (from walmart so it was super cheap), a small box of assorted ornaments and garland, and some candy canes and other various decorations (with glue and glitter so they could write their names on their stockings). Also in there was some hot cocoa mix and a tin of cookies.

Since it takes a while for packages to get to Iraq, you need to send Christmas related items about a month early. But TRUST me, they appreciate it!

Just another idea to think about Chat Icon
