Spin-off to cooking dinner

Hmmm, this is quite interesting to me. I do not cook at all. I actually love cooking, but do it maybe 4x a month. My DH and I both commute to Manhattan, we never have time to grocery shop and when I come home I am starved, so I have no interest in cooking (my hubby too). It's funny hearing how most women cook dinner every night for their DH's. I will usually get cheap take-out for us or just myself (if he's working too late). Are there others who live on take out too or resturants??

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

Before I met Dh that was my life... either that or cereal or a tuna fish sandwich for dinner. DH still makes fun of me to this day about how I used to eat. For me, I can't cook. And, honestly, I don't enjoy it either, so DH does most of the cooking.

Before my father moved in with us, though, I'd say he'd cook maybe 2-3 times a week and the other days we'd either just grab a veggie burger or something like that, or do take-out. Now that my dad is with us, we cook every night... which is... EXHAUSTING!

I hate to cook and don't do it a lot. DH entertains clients at least twice a week, so he goes out to eat at restaurants while I stay at home and fend for myself. If anyone cooks in our house it's DH.

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

I love to cook, however DH works nights so we hardly eat together. I would like to do it more often!

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

I have always cooked and never found a problem with it. I would not say I cook 7 days a week because I don't but I would say at least 4 days I am. With 2 kids, it is not so easy just to eat cereal or a sandwich. Sometimes we feed the kids and then get some kind of take-out. They get to eat what they like and it is cheaper than getting for all of us.

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

we do-- there is just no time to *cook* dinner... If we cook, it's making a salad or soup (i.e. open can, put in microwave). If we are getting really crazy-- I MAY make some pasta or a fritatta.

It's all about the toaster oven and the microwave for us!

On the weekends-- we go out to eat.

There is never any time.....Chat Icon

I try to cook, but either I work late or he works late so if I cook and he doesnt get in until 10pm, its pointless.

The food shopping is what kills us. shopping in NYC is ridiculous. I do my shopping on LI but he will never eat leftovers so most of it goes to waste.

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

If I could afford to live on take-out and restaurants, I would. I don't like to cook, and after working and commuting, it's the last thing I feel like doing. That said, we can't afford it, so I try to cook more nights than not, and make extra so we have leftovers. I'd say it's a lot if I cook 3 nights in a row. I cook fairly easy stuff most of the time. Tonight, we have a gourmet meal planned of mac and cheese from the box and a can of veggie soup! Usually, I make things like chicken cutlets, or a chopped meat dish.

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

DH & I both work in Manhattan. I cook at least 4 nights a week, sometimes more, when I get home. Dinner time is so important for DH & I --- to sit together and eat a meal and talk.

Sometimes I will cook big things on a Sunday so I can reheat it during the week, otherwise it is stuff that can be cooked in under and hour.

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

Regarding the working different times....does anyone cook, eat alone and have leftovers for their dh when they come home? I just ask because my dh used to work until 11pm and I got off at 5pm and would do that. We both were able to eat a meal everynight (even though it was not together-Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon )

The last thing I want to do after working all day and commuting (which is a second job within itself) is cook. Most of the time we make a meal or 2 that we can re-heat to eat during the week, or just prepare something thats quick and easy like taco salad for example. We get take out once or twice a week.

After one evening where I waited for him to eat and his 8pm meeting turned into an 11:30pm thing, (I WAS SO MAD) we decided that I would do longer wait for him passed 8:30pm. I would either order food for both of us or make a meal and save him a plate

That stinks. I would come home at 5pm, make a whole meal and then he would heat it up when he got home. I wouldn't wait to eat with him as I was off to bed (or already there) when he got home.

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

Right now Dh's job pays for all food-everything- so we go out to dinner most nights! Before he took this crazy job- i would cook most nights-, but DH is a good cook and would do it as well!

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

When we were living in our apt I would get home around 5:45 and cook dinner.
Right now we are living with my parents, so my mom cooks dinner, which is nice - we are getting spoiled!!

In a couple of months when we have our own place we won't be getting home till about 6:30, I think I will be making use of the slow coooker a lot of days!

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

Awfully, I don't cook nor do we get take out every night. Chat Icon

I really have no idea how we even eat! Usually DH eats leftovers from a meal I made in the beginning of the week or the weekend, or a pre-portioned meal from the freezer.
I get home after 8 so I usually have a really late lunch and eat an apple or something for a snack.
About once a week we get some takeout.

Once we have kids our routine has to change.

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

We go in spurts. My DH usually cooks and lucky for me he LOVES gourmet food. Last night we had seared pork tenderloin with red chili aioli! When I cook I am boring. I amke very simple meals. Although I make a mean potato!

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

I don't cook...except for a dinner for DH about once a month. For that, I like to do something nice.

He cooks though 'cause he enjoys it.

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

I never cook dinner

I commute from NY to CT - and run my own business at night

my DH works till 9:30 most nights

I buy alot of frozen stuff from trader joes and we each make something for our selves to eat

I just don't have time- there is only so much I can do

Re: Spin-off to cooking dinner

I only like to cook when I have time to do it, or if I plan ahead. When I commuted to the city from Kings Park, I hardly ever made dinner b/c I'd get home at 8PM. Plus my DH is very picky about food - he doesn't like anything frozen or from a can, will only eat bakery or Arnold bread, and meat can only come from the meat farm.Chat Icon So I cook about 4 nights per week, he'll cook 2, and we get take out on Friday's.
