Spin off to mailboxes

Do any of you have a mail slot cut in your front door? My parents have had this for years and I love it because no one can tell when you aren't home.

I think we are going to do the same thing.

I guess I should find out if I can even do that at our new house. Right now the mailbox is attached to the house right by the front door.

Yes - We do and so do my parents - we will have to do this with our new home as there is one next to the door and we prefer to have ours in the door so people can't take stuff out of our mailbox.

Something to keep in mind is that I believe they have to be above a certain height in the door or the mail carrier won't use it.

I think it is 42" from the ground

Re: Spin off to mailboxes

Ours is in the garage (Levitt house).

Nobody in my area has a mailbox by the curb.

ETA: you need to check with the post office for your town. They have different restriction on where the mailbox should be.

We don't even have mailboxes on both sides of the street!!! Its a rural route.
Ours happens to be right at the end of our driveway only because our house is situated away from the others.

Ours is almost at ground level and we have never had a complaint. Maybe b/c it as always been like that?

Re: Spin off to mailboxes

I had one in an apartment. My dog used to attack the mail as it was coming in. One time he got into a tug of war as the mailman decided to try to pull the mail back out so that the dog would not get it. It freaked my dog out when the mail came in!!!! Funny memory, now though.

The house we are buying has a mail slot in the door. I think this is great, but have to find a way to teach my dog to not eat the mail!

It just means they have to cover 10 times as many houses as the walk-up routes. DW used to be a mounted letter carrier (in the truck). Trust me, it is *not* a job for lazy people! Plus, it's safer for the carrier. There are way to many dogs that approach the letter carriers. Even though the owners say "Oh, he wouldn't hurt anybody."... the number of dog bites and attacks say differently...

Ours is at the curb. With little kids and a dog, I prefer it that way. Nobody would ever be able to nap if the dog was going insane every single day when someone came to the door!
