Spin-off to plane advice - question

When do you have to purchase a seat for your baby?
Do they have to be a certain age to fly?

I'm curious, because I want to visit my grandmother in Cali a few months after the baby is born. She can no longer travel and I want her to meet her great-grandson.

Thanks!!

They can fly for free, sitting on your lap, until their 2nd birthday.

Good to know.

So my next question is, for you seasoned travelers, when would suggest to get the baby their own seat?

Re: Spin-off to plane advice - question

if you can get a sweet airfare, then get the baby his/her own seat (bring the car seat and he/she can sleep in there.

If you can't, you can just have them sit on your lap. I've done it a ton of times (even with when they are bigger) and it was fine. Most of the time, I lucked out and was able to move my seat to where there was one free seat beside me.

If possible ($$$) I would always get DD her own seat. When she was under 6 months, maybe it wouldn't be as bad to have her on our laps, but after that, she was not a good lap baby. if your baby is good on your lap you could keep him/him there until 2, although it's safer for DC to be in a carseat in their own seat. Re: Spin-off to plane advice - question

I just want to share this because I know many people that had their babies sit on their lap, and when we recently booked our first family vacation, I only got a lap ticket for my baby. He will be 6 months at the time. Anyway, I mentioned this to my lactation consultant and she told me that i really should consider getting the baby a seat, and that it is actually very unsafe to just hold the baby on your lap if the plane hits a lot of turbulence. I wasnt fully convinced but then i asked my pediatrician and she went off about how the airlines are really behind the times on infant safety, how they clearly do not care about babies by letting them sit on your lap, and how you really need to get your baby a seat. I think she has a point so we ended up buying a seat...

Thanks for sharing this. We have been buying DD her own seat for a long time now. We travel with her ALOT. I always knew it was safer, but reading your post makes me realize just how much safer it is. I feel so much better about spending the extra $$$. She's even got her own frequent flyer accounts. Thanks for posting this. I have to book a trip to Puerto Rico for BILs wedding later this year. The thought of DD being 10 months old and sitting on my lap all the way down there is not appealing. She's squirmy enough at 3 months!

ETA: I just noticed that I posted on that thread too! My memory is shot. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Spin-off to plane advice - question

We have been fortunate enough that we have not yet had to actually purchase a seat for Jeremy on any of the flights we have taken. I typically fly on "off" times and have been lucky enough to get him his own seat without paying for it. I would not fly with him at all if I had to actually keep him on my lap. I have nursed on take off and landing but just knowing that the car seat was there for turbulence or when he slept was very comforting.

Re: Spin-off to plane advice - question

I just flew with a 15 month old on my lap(my American Airlines flight got cancelled and my DH booked me on United at the last minute costing us $500 for just one ticket) and it actually wasn't too bad. She is NOT a lap baby but she did sit when she needed to and then stood in the aisle a lot. It was a very calm flight though and the only turbulance we had was when she was safely sleeping in my lap, thank GOD.

But I still wished we had our seat back that I purchased on AmericanChat Icon
