Spin-off to politics & 4th graders-politics in the office
A co-worker wears a pin supporting 1 candidate.Today there are extra pins in a public area, with a note saying "feel free to take one (but only if you are going to wear it.)"
Is that inappropriate for the workplace? I don't think it violates any comapny rules, but it just seems wrong.

IMO, yes.
Does the work that you do in your office have anything to do with politics?
If not - it is distracting from work and inappropriate in the workplace.

I don't think so. Don't want to talk about it or wear it on your sleeve don't wear it. It's not like they are making you wear it.

In my company it would be totally off limits! I think it invites controversy into the workplace.

That's why I am pretty sure it doesn't violate any rules. And no, we don't work for the government, or any kind of public service & our job doens't have anything to do with politics.
However, if there were enough for everyone in the office ( small place) and only a few people didn't take them, it could make those people targets of harrasment by the supporters, or at least make theings awkward.
I guess it would only be a problem if it did escalate to harrasment, but it just brings in a element that usually isn't in this office.
Or, I could just be grumpy, b/c I am in a bad mood & I don't like the person that did it!

Re: Spin-off to politics & 4th graders-politics in the office
They can wear it as long as there is no corporate policy against it. It's not illegal (assumig they're not working in a polling place), however it's poor HR practice to allow it.
In the private sector, employees don't have First Amendment rights at work. If an employer thought a politicians views were directly opposed to their corporate agenda, in many states an employee can be fired for it. Case in point, the Alabama woman who was fired for refusing to remove her Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker from her car (which was parked on company grounds).

Re: Spin-off to politics & 4th graders-politics in the office
personally, i think it's very inappropriate to push your views onto other people. in my line of work, i have to stay politically neutral, even tho many of my colleagues do not amongst ourselves.
i feel that because i seem to not be with the majority, i can't openly support my candidate without being looked down upon or maybe even shunned.
so i keep my opinons to myself.

Thank you! That was informative & helpful.
That's basically what I thought--not illegal, or against policy (I checked our very brief employee handbook), but just not a good idea (although I suppose that is a matter of opinion).
We don't have HR here, there are only about 12 of us. These sorts of things come down to the (very busy) director.
If I was the boss, I'd probably ask her to move the freebies & sign, but I guess wearing the button herself would be ok, unless the handbook was amended.

Re: Spin-off to politics & 4th graders-politics in the office
Inappropriate. We're specificlaly not allowed to engage in political activity at work, but several of us have Bushism calendars and stuff. but I think putting the buttons out is taking it a step too far. It's the same as putting out religious articles, etc. I think if you have a private conversation and want to share a button or something, that's fine, but to display them like that is pretty inappropriate.
