spin off to when to stop the bottles
So my dd will be 2.5 in June and she still has a morning and night bottle. I know we were supposed to drop them all at 1, but she loves them and since she was a preemie and underweight I felt that she needed the milk and still feel like she does. She will not take milk from a sippy, but does use a sippy with a straw for water and juice throughout the day.
Anyone go through this? How can we get her to switch? Should I buy some other type of sippy cup that is new so it might be more fun to her? Drinking the bottle is part of our routine and I don't know how to break it, since she asks for them.
Also, I'm due with my ds at the end of next month, so will she freak out when she sees him with a bottle, if I make her give them up now? TIA

Re: spin off to when to stop the bottles
I thought my ds was never going to give up his bedtime bottle. Around 20 months I decided to try the take & toss sippy straw cups. I showed them to him & made a big deal that this is his special big boy cup. He got really excited about that & hasn't had a bottle since. He doesn't drink as much milk as he used to but he has other things with dairy during the day like yogurt & cheese.

Do what works for you. As long as they are sleeping with the bottle or going around all day with it. I don't think there is anything wrong with it. My older ds was over 3 when we ditched the night bottle. He loved having his milk before bed. One day we said no more bottles and he threw them out. His younger brother who was a little over 2 at the time lost them too.

Re: spin off to when to stop the bottles
My younger DD was around 3 when we finally got rid of the bottles. Like yours, she had issues, and was actually not able to drink from anything other than the bottle, due to low muscle tone in the mouth/lips. The dentist encouraged us to get her off of it, but understood that it was the only way she could get the nutrition (she was also on formula til almost 2.5), so just said to do what works.
p/s - she still can't drink from a sippy, just a straw.

My son has feeding delays and was getting a milk bottle in the morning and at night until the day before his 3rd birthday. We had tried in the past and he would not do it. Finally I got one cup that he would drink a little milk out of and on the morning of his 3rd birthday I gave him the cup. It took a couple of weeks for him to adjust, but he did. He is now 4 and will drink milk out of straw cups and sippy cups. He still has feeding issues... His therapists had no problem with it as it was his main source of nutrition at the time.

spin off to when to stop the bottles
DS just dropped last week and he turned 2 in dec. we went to FL and didnt bring any. He was fine so when we got home we said cuppy at night and he was fine. I figured we would tackle the morning one later. Well one morning he told me no Elmo cuppy. And that was the end.
Now it's Elmo cuppy. I would try eliminating one and let them pick the cup so it's special. I also used the your a big boy now.

I know we were supposed to drop them all at 1,
Just wanted to say that there is no "supposed to" drop all bottles at 1. Milk is great for a child's brain development so I don't see the need to rush a child off of a bottle and potentially lower his/her milk intake.

This. I promise they won't go to college with a bottle.
I pick my battles and dropping a bottle was not one.

Re: spin off to when to stop the bottles
DD is going to be 3 in a few weeks and still likes her baba. Its a battle I have chosen not to have. She will drink out of real cups and straw cups and sippy cups, but sometimes she just wants a baba and that's fine with me. She's really intent on being a big girl these days so I am hopeful that soon she will realize babas are for babys and stop them. Its a security thing for her and since she can and does drink milk, water and juice other ways throughout the day i am not pushing the issue.

Yup. I want to know who made up that arbitrary rule anyway. It wasn't a rule when I was a baby according to my mom. I wasn't about to put my DD through the trama of it for no reason. When she was ready, she gave them up. Same with potty training. I cannot stand rules.

Re: spin off to when to stop the bottles
My ds1 that was taking a night time bottle until almost 3 has a ton of cavities. I just felt bad taking it away bc he fell asleep with it and was also kind of skinny. I took it away from ds2 at a year and he has great teeth.
If your child is brushing their teeth afterward, then I guess there's no magic number that the bottle has to be gone by- but most kids fall asleep with them.
Eta We introduced chocolate almond milk at dinner. So he still gets the extra nutrition.
Also is your dd actually underweight, or just in your head? I'm constantly neurotic about ds1's weight bc he looks so skinny to me, but he's actually in the 40th percentile, which is basically average.

Re: spin off to when to stop the bottles
Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance. I'm going to try a new cup and see if that works, but I'm not going to force it if it doesn't.
My dd doesn't sleep with the bottle, she just has it before bedtime, so I'll start to brush her teeth after and before bed. Thanks for the advice. Also, she is only in the 5th percentile, so she is following her curve but I still like her getting the calories and fat from the whole milk.

Re: spin off to when to stop the bottles
my first ds was off the bottle at 18ms easy transistion.
DS2 just turned 3 and he still takes a bottle. He drinks one before bed and he will occasionally ask for one during the day when he is cranky or overwhelmed. We keep saying we have to get rid of hte bottle but really I dont see the rush. We will take it away when he is ready.

My DS is 20 months and still has a bottle before bed. I don't think he is any where near ready getting rid of it.
