Spin-off: Watching movies in music class
Do your kids watch movies in music class? This drives me up the wall, they only go once every 6 school days for 40 minutes. In the past month they've watched Annie and "the dancing parts" of the Nutcracker.

Re: Spin-off: Watching movies in music class
Emily has told me that they watched just Fantasia but not the whole thing ... just a specific part.
From what it sounded like the Art teacher was absent, the music teacher had to cover and double up her classes, and so she showed a movie.
I am not against it for a once in a while thing. I actually think that teachers can show clips of things and even whole movies and make them tie in with the curriciulum. I just hope that they are not doing it on a regular basis and in an unmeaningful way!

Re: Spin-off: Watching movies in music class
My DD never watches movies in music class. I could see it to sum up a unit on something relevant or to illustrate the fact that music goes along with ballets or operas, etc. But not on a regular basis, that would annoy me.

I could definitely see it as a tool if used properly. How can you explain in words, a musical, a large group of people singing, a concert, etc? Barring a field trip, a movie clip is probably the next best thing. It shouldn't be a regular occurrence, but it could help reinforce a topic.

With a lesson attached to it, I'm ok with it. Not as a substitute for a lesson though.

I can see once a quarter intoducing a class to a musical that they might not have the chance to see otherwise

I could see once in a while, but it seems like every time they go the past month or so.

this would bother me and I would probably inquire. As most said above, once in awhile., or as part of a lesson is OK in my eyes. Not every time they go to music!

Re: Spin-off: Watching movies in music class
When I was a long term music sub (with no plans left BTW) I played them the sound of music, after teaching them all parts to the music. They sang to it and it was so awesome. Something I will never forget.
