Spinoff - How do you know if it's inclusion or not?
How do you know if your child is in an inclusion class? Is it specified or is it a given if there is a teacher's assistant or aide in the class? Is it based mainly on a learning disability or any kind of disability?
I'm trying to get a better understanding of what inclusion is. TIA!

Re: Spinoff - How do you know if it's inclusion or not?
This is the 1st year that my DD is in a class that is an inclusion class. I knew when we found out who her teacher was that he was the 4th grade inclusion class. In this case DD has 4 kids in her class that are in Special Ed. I happen to know 3 of the 4 kids and they all are either ADD or ADHD. They are good kids with some issues. These kids are pulled out a few times during the day and the Special Ed teacher "pushes in" at times. They also have a full time aide for those kids. At back to school night the teacher and the special ed teacher told us all about it.

If you ask, you have to be told, although it may not be advertised. A dead giveaway is 2 teachers and an assistant in the room.
If your child is a student in an inclusion class, you DO NOT have the right to know who the identified students are, or their speciific issues. That is by law. If the teacher gives any of this info, he/she is completely out of line.

I think this is the best and most common way parents are notified.

Re: Spinoff - How do you know if it's inclusion or not?
an inclusion class is not a secret. there are 2 full time teachers (usually).
there is no reason a typical child is placed there. it's the luck of the draw, and your child has won the lottery if they are lucky enough to have 2 teachers! those 2 teachers help EVERY child, they don't just help "their own".
if you're really not sure, just ask the teacher. your child will still get the EXACT education she would get in any other class. inclusion is regular general ed, but lessons are modified for learning styles or abilities for children with needs. it won't impact your child's education, except that she will get more personalized attention and will probably get additional activites and projects due to the additional teacher. my general ed kids get tons more advanced work than in typical general ed classes because i have the time to create them.
i have been an inclusion teacher for 7 years, please feel free to FM me if you have any other questions!

To be honest - nobody ever said "Robbie is in an inclusion class" - but I know that in kindergarten one of his classmates was autistic. I also know that there are 3 children in his class now who are learning disabled because I know their parents and they have told me. Outside of that.. I don't think i would know. Or care.
