Thanks to Monkeybrides informative thread, the more I read, the more we should be VERY VERY worried and need to speak out re Cuomo's decision on allowing fracking in LI and NY.

Do you know if there is some kind of actual threat to Long Island's drinking water (inasmuch as it is primarily ground water as opposed to the reservoir/aqueduct delivery system prevalent in the remainder of the state)? I admit I read it briefly and would like to know if I'm missing something with specific regard to that. Thanks.

I am new to this also, just learning so I can't answer that directly. Just know in general that this is not good as there are no safeguards in place regarding drinking water and it being effected from this.

Okay, thanks for responding. My DH wants to look into this more; he focused a lot on Long Island's water supply and sources of contamination while in grad school and this piqued his interest. I will let you know what (if anything - since he's being a SAHD this week for the first time, lol) he finds.

When we were living in Grand Junction, there were 1/2 a dozen news stories about people being turning on their faucets and being able to light water coming out. Some were long ways away from drilling pads.

I too, started reading up on the fracking ordeal when it was first posted and am extremely alarmed at the risks - however before getting all crazy I would be cautious about just banning it altogether - while fracking has been going on for decades, only High Volume Hydro Fracking has been only going on for a few years at most.
Here is an interesting thread about it concerning upstate NY's concerns (they would bear the most environmental risks) on City-Data which has more links to what fracking is, the risks, effects, etc:

A group has been going around in my neighborhood asking for signatures and donations to help protest this. I would also like more information about if LI water is directly effected. The group was out of Farmingdale, but NYS information (Albany) was also on the paperwork.

Here are some Water Stats for you, Each Well uses 2-10 MILLION gallons of water Each Well uses 20k-100k of fracking Chemicals
(Each company has a different cocktail of chemicals, that they don't have to reveal because they are a "trade secret" but they are known to contain: diesel fuel, xylene, benzene, toluene, and ethyl-benzene)
Oh and the rock they are pumping all of this water into..... highly radio active.
Up to 400,000 wells can be drilled out of this shale formation.
So an if we say an average of 5 million gallons of water used per well
5,000,000 gallons x 400,000 = 2,000,000,000,000 of contaminated waste water.
