I have never been a wine drinker but I want to buy a nice red wine for my friend as a housewarming gift. I know they like red ( I guess Merlot )

Re: Spinoff - wine drinkers come in
There are many kinds of red, so you can't assume she/he likes merlot. I for one...hate it! ha ha!
I do like a good Bordeaux (a blend); you can find some fairly cheap. Pinot noir is also nice and mellow--not too tannic (bitter--grape skin taste)
Castlerock Pinot Noir is a safe bet! It's really good!

Okay then! Hmmm...well, Long Island is known for its Merlot, so I'd advise you check out a wine shop and ask for reasonably priced suggestions. Wish I had some for ya! Mrs. PorkChop knows a ton about wine; I'd ask her!

I agree. Merlot is the only wine I don't like. Makes me sick.

Re: Spinoff - wine drinkers come in
go to the winestore and ask for anything by Rosenblum
that is my favorite vintner and you CANT go wrong with them their Petite Sirah "San Francisco Bay Heritage Clones 2004" is about 21-25 and AWESOME!!!
Also Penfolds Cabernet-Shiraz Bin 389 is $26-28 and AWESOME Marquis- Phillipe Merlot is about $19 and awesome as well

Re: Spinoff - wine drinkers come in
For Cabernet, I would try Ruffino Classico Cabernet Sauvignon

Re: Spinoff - wine drinkers come in
If she likes Merlot, Rosemount Estates makes a very decent merlot for the price.
Some other reds she may like..
Marques de Caceres, Rioja Penfolds
Maybe also see if she likes Shiraz.
Rosemount also makes a Shiraz Grenache that is yummy

Re: Spinoff - wine drinkers come in
I am no where near a wine expert but the reds I like are Coppola Claret and always like Ruffino Chianti
Chianti though I usually have if I am eating pasta - the Coppola I just recommend b/c I can drink the entire bottle and I am usually not a red wine drinker so I think it is good - I don't know really how nice or fancy it is.

Rafael makes some delicious red wines, on the dry side.

Re: Spinoff - wine drinkers come in
Shiraz - it's one of the safer bets.
I also find that riojas are pretty consistent.
One word on Merlot or Cabernet - because they're the most popular/widely stocked wines in the US, the quality may vary widely between vinters.
Also, if your friends really enjoy wine, then they'll probably like to try something new anyway - DH and I are always trying different kinds and it's really great when we find something new that we like - especially when we didn't have to pay for it ourselves
