Spinoff: 16 and pg???? --- Celebrity Role Models
When you were growing up, did you have a celebrity role model? And if so did you truly look up to that person - did what they did, wore what they wore, etc?
I see a lot of people talking about role models and they're afraid of what their DC will do b/c of these role models...but I have to say, I don't really remember having many celebrity role models, and even if I did, I didn't "do" what they did. KWIM?

I remember really digging Pam Dawber as a kid when she was on Mork and Mindy. But I certainly didn't know about her life or emulate her or anything.

I liked a lot of people but never obsessed over them or looked up to them.

Hmmm...I dont know that I think its 1 person or another...I think its a group of people acting a certain way that groups them together that makes the statement. I think if Nickelodeon keeps her show on with her preggo and then lets say Hannah Montana gets preggo that it becomes like an unnecssary "fad". I actually remember when Britt Spears came out of her "school girl" look and into her half tops...that became the #1 costume that yr. ALl the little girls came to the doors with half tops and little microphones hooked to their heads. Unnecsessary IMO...

Nope, don't remember having one. And if I did, I just pretty much dressed like they did.
I don't understand why people consider these people "role models" for their children. IMO, it's up to YOU to teach your child how to act and the basic fundamentals of life, not a celebrity. Sure, they could have a singer or actress that they admire, but that's different than having someone that you want to emulate.

Re: Spinoff: 16 and pg???? --- Celebrity Role Models
Maybe because of all of the celebrity talk shows and websites out there, celebrities are more in your face now than when we were kids. We only saw them in magazines or the shows they were on...now they're everywhere, so they become part of the kids' lifestyle.

I highly doubt that being a teen mother will become a fad , do you really believe that??
To answer the original post- When I was young I was a fan and like alot of different ceelbitries growing up, but I did not run out an do everything they did. I think we have to give kids a little more credit than that. Also a child may look upto a celetiy but I would hope that they also look up to their parents ,other family members, teachers ect..meaning that if they have a good foundation then no ONE person should be able to mold thier thoughts and ideas.

I didn't have a "role model". But I soooo wanted to be Olivia Newton John in Grease. ( so showing my age right now- ).
I did have many teen idols, though:
Rick Springfield Scott Baio John Travolta (now...not so much) Corey Hart (Never Surrender- )
Mmmm...lived for that Bop and Tiger Beat magazine!!

It seems to be a trend, if not a fad. These days, people seem to act like it's no big deal when a teenager or anyone else has a baby out of wed lock.

We didn't have the internet when I was growing up, so we didn't know as much about teen celebs as we do now.
I think this is the key!! What we learned about celebs in the 80's and 90's were from the Teen Beat mags and such. They were VERY filtered and so unscandolous. No one chased hte celebs around TRYING to catch them doing stuff, especially not the teen celebs. I remember Madonna was so scandalous- but everything she dis was out in the open. The press weren't "catching" her. Anything in the Enquirer was considered a joke and far fetched.
But now, with the internet and US Weekly, People, EW, Hello, OK Life and Style, etc... there are so many more venues for these photos. , the paparazzi's full time job is to expose these celebs. The $ to do so is so high, cameras are tiny, zoom incredibly and are everywhere from our phones to our palms.

Re: Spinoff: 16 and pg???? --- Celebrity Role Models
Wasn't David Cassidy or something like that doing loads of drugs? Leif Garratt was a RAGING alcoholic and I hear that Donny Osmand beats his wife (okay kidding about that bit...)
But ladies, lets not kid ourselves...its a different world today than the one that we grew up in. Completely different.

Exactly to a "T" what I meant and that is why I put it in "quotes" bc I didnt have the exact words. AND YES...I do believe that girls follow in role models patterns.
