Spinoff: An ad for NYPD recruitment on 7online
Right next to the story about the shooting in Queens.
Any thoughts about this?

off topic a little bit, but I really don't get how $25K a year for a job like that would appeal to anyone. talk about GROSSLY underpaid!

wow...talk about ironic advertising.
NYPD is desperate for new recruits. but not too many ppl want to become a cop for a starting salary of $25K (pro-rated for the six months they are in the academy)

It appeals to people because of the pension plan and benefits.

It appeals to people because of the pension plan and benefits. sure the benefits are great, but who can live on that salary in NY (or anywhere really)

absolutely...great pkges. but they are still underpaid.
a suffolk county cop's starting salary is just about the same as what an NYPD cop gets when he reaches top pay. you can not tell me that a cop in suffolk has the same dangers as a cop working out of E. New York, Bed-Stuy, S. Jamaica, or any other dangerous area.

Well, they get OT too - but still, its SAD. They deserve a lot more than they get.

3 of DH cousins are cops on the NYPD. None of them make enough to live on their own, and they have all been on the job for at least 3 years. In addition, they cannot get a second job without approval, which very rarely is granted.
I think NYPD needs to be on par or better than Nassau & Suffolk salaries.

NYC teacher salaries should really be up to Nassau and Suffolk too.

A lot of the cops I know do it for excitement(and the pension). Most of the male officers have wives that work.

Yes, they are underpaid and underappreciated...
My brother worked there for the opportunity to advance- meaning, he used that as a platform to get hired in Nassau or Suffolk.
He worked there, miserably and struggled, for two years until he got Nassau and has been working there now for just over a year.
He accomplished his goals.

I went through all of the testing, physical, medical, etc. and asked myself "What the heck am I doing? There's no appreciation or respect from the public and they don't pay enough to put up with the bullsh*t."

Re: Spinoff: An ad for NYPD recruitment on 7online
Don't even get me started. I have lots of love for the NYPD...I have family members who have been officers. Honestly, the type of people they attract due to the salary has gone down hill. The mentality is not where it should be, nor is the maturity. No mean to offend, but please understand...I am speaking from experience.

Don't you have to have college credits or a degree. For $25k????! For putting your life on the line every day. I don't think so.

Re: Spinoff: An ad for NYPD recruitment on 7online
but they also get a pension- personally I don't have a pension and I started out making 10K more then that
my uncle is retired NYPD at 45 year old- and has another job now- and gets his pension
my Dad- a teacher - retired at 52 and he is at the beach today
the salary could be higher- but the pension is something that most people in the private sector will never see
plus the insurance benefits are much better then most of us in the private sector will see- my birth control pills were $5 a pack under my parents insurance- now they are $20

Very true - you have to look at the whole package. What you don't have in salary you may make up for in benefits.

Re: Spinoff: An ad for NYPD recruitment on 7online
The police union sold out its new members, which is why starting salaries are so low. The Mayor had them against a wall- he is NOT a fan of any union. Look at how long the FDNY went without a contract after 9/11- a disgrace after all they lost IMO.
I don't know how the police pension works, but the teacher pension is 4% of our salary (all my money, the city matches nothing) and if the police have a similar percentage, 4% of $25k isn't much.
Those of us who work for the city in any field will not have the good insurance that we have much longer, in my view. My meds used to be $5 a month, now they're $30.

I dont know - my dad was NYPD, and while the pension is great and the benefits are okay, i can tell you I am 500% better off working without a pension in the private sector.
And similar to teachers needing the summer break after 9 months of teaching, cops need to retire after 20-25 years on the job. the stress level is so high and to be honest, a 50 year old cop on the street probably isnt doing as much good as a 22 year old cop would do.
And if the pension were that great, cops could truely retire when they retired, not be on to their next job like your uncle, and most other cops....

my uncle works b/c he wants too- that's just the kind of guy he is
most people can't live off there pension alone- my cousin is only 14- his daughter- he still has to pay for college
the only reason why my Dad doesn't work after retiring from teaching is that he worked 2 or 3 jobs while teaching- including owning a company

Re: Spinoff: An ad for NYPD recruitment on 7online
nypd def sold out their future recruits - yes they get a great pension but their salary is not enough to live off of - they max out at 59,000 and even that takes 5 years - yes there is overtime but in some areas it is harder to get than others and the older guys get first picks
and they are without a contract again - since the last contract was two years overdue - that one expired practically immediately
