Yeah a pension is wonderful, but that's one of the benefits of working for the governement. Little known secret is that many rookies went on the street after June and were still at $25,100. Think about that for a minute...working on the street for $25,100! Kinda crazy for what they are risking! Plus, how does one live in NY getting paid $25,100? Then they take out taxes, plus you have to pay for all of your equipment for the academy yourself which comes to about $3k. You are left with penuts! And like I said, the salary has attracted 2 kinds...one that wants to be a PO no matter what the salary or two people who lack the maturity or prospects and settle for it. Usually the second winds up giving the first problems.

This is a real problem- that salary is not going to attract the type of people needed. The same argument was made for teachers- and I have unfortunately seen some losers become NYC teachers- because the city could not get anyone else. But attracting the best people through a competetive salary is a strong argument so hopefully the police union will be able to win something back for the rookies.
