Spinoff: Are you buying a Breast Pump??

Just curious what everyone plans on doing. I don't know if I want to shell out all that money for something I may not use. I'm so confused!!Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Are you buying a Breast Pump??

I don't know... but I think I am not...

while I would like the convenience of a pump that is portable (hospital ones generally are heavy, I think), many pumps break down... even the ones that have decent ratings Chat Icon

pair that with the fact that right now there is construction on our floor, and I don't have a private office where I can pump when I return to work, and that spells formula for Crouton's future (2 mo and later, when I'm working again)

Re: Spinoff: Are you buying a Breast Pump??

Im gonna rent from the hospital until I know if it works for me.. timing, baby, etc.

If not then I'll formula feed.. BF doesn't work for everyone and I always plan for the best and expect the worst Chat Icon

So I'm taking a "we'll see" approach

I can't justify buying it now.. what if the baby doesnt latch well or i get milk clots or I am on meds or I can't produce enough milk.. etc.

Nope Im waiting

Just my $.02

I can't imagine right now using something that someone else's boob was in... How much do these things cost anyway? If they are REALLY expensive, I guess I'll have to rent...

I believe the part you put your "Boob On" you have to pay for .. its not a hand me down with the machine. You RENT the actual pump but buy your own cups and tubing, make sense.. so you know that your boob is the only boob Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Are you buying a Breast Pump??

With my son, i tried breastfeeding for a month, but I supplemented with formula and in the end didnt work out for me. I plan on trying again this time around. I will get a hand pump, I used that in the beginning with my son just to help me when my breasts got too painful. And if I have better success this time around with bf then I will get the real pump.

Re: Spinoff: Are you buying a Breast Pump??

I'm taking the wait and see approach too. We can always rent from the hospital or I can send DH to the store, if I really need one right away (manual or electric). If I really think it will work for me then I'll shell out the big bucks for a Pump in Style Advanced. I'm not returning to work immediately, so I would mostly be using it to relieve engorgement and so that DH or the grandparents could give the baby a bottle. I registered for one but nobody bought it...it was worth it to try and see.

I am going to rent one this time around and then if it all works out then I will buy one.

With Andrew I couldn't BF. I tried for a couple of months but it just didn't work out. That is why I will go this route this time around.

Oh that's a good idea, to just buy an inexpensive hand pump. That would definately get me through to see what I would need or want.

Re: Spinoff: Are you buying a Breast Pump??

My sister just had a baby and couldn't produce enough breast milk, so she gave me her fancy pump. I am going to BF for three months.

I did and am so glad! I used it the day after I got home from the hospital! My milk hadn't come in and DD was getting dehydrated. The pediatrician said I had to supplement with a bottle and I didn't want to use formula. I pumped the colostrum and supplemented with that until my milk came in (only 1 day of supplementing). At 3 1/2 weeks old I'm going to start pumping once/day and having DH feed that milk to her in a bottle. I will be going back to work in September so I want Chat Icon to take a bottle. My pediatrician says if I wait too long to introduce it early enough she may not take one ever. By 3 1/2 weeks we'll have our groove down with BF and a bottle won't interupt that.

I bought one - the expensive one - and will leave it unopened until I need it in case I need to return it.

My boobies have been leaking so I am fairly certain that my milk will come in.

Re: Spinoff: Are you buying a Breast Pump??

I rented one for the first month from Homecare America in Babylon & then when I saw it worked out okay, I got a Medela PIS Advanced, which I'm still using 11 months later. It's worked wonderful day/in, day/out.

To clarify from earlier posts, if you rent a pump, the tubing & the nipple shields you buy separately (its a kit)--at the hospital they gave me the kit when I pumped in the NICU; but then when I rented from the store they made me buy another kit ($50). It was about 120. to rent the pump the first month (total).

I also had the manual, but your hand gets tired fast....

Re: Spinoff: Are you buying a Breast Pump??

I plan on renting one first, no one in my family has been able to pump yet(no problems BFing, but the pumping doesn't work - apparently we have defective boobies), so I don't want to spend $300 and not be able to use it.

If you don't break the seal on the box, you can return it.

I bought one. The cost to rent one was about equal to the cost of my pump (I got ther Avent isis IQ)

Re: Spinoff: Are you buying a Breast Pump??

DH and I initially rented from the hospital for 10 days because I needed to keep stimulating until my milk came in, and DS came home later than me because he was in the NICU. Also, the hospital grade pump had a much better motor/suction than the ones at BRU. Since DS never learned to latch and I wanted to give him breast milk, I began to exclusively pump. We changed our contract to monthly because we went past the 10 days. By the end of the month, we canceled the contract and decided to purchase a Medela PIS Advance. It's cheaper than continuing to rent and I can travel with it. The hospital ones are ridiculously heavy!

Long story short, we rented until we decided buying one was right for us. We didn't want to commit to buying something expensive unless we actually needed it.

i pumped at the hospital to get my supply up and that is how it works with the ones you actually use at the hospital, so i assume that is how the rentals work as well.

I rented directly from the LCs at the hospital. They charged $30 for 10 days or $75/month.
