spinoff Daycare Question- curriculum?

I've been reading your responses/advice about the different curriculum at different centers and it makes me feel very inadequate. It's looking like I have to put DD in but I have no teaching background and I know nothing about educating young ones. How were you able to evaluate these centers curriculum and decide that one was better than the others Chat Icon ? I was focused on facility and staff. I didn't even really venture into curriculum. Can you help me? Of course I want my daughter to get the best education possible but I feel so in the dark about what that is? KWIM?

Well in my opinion, your thinking was on the right track!
At such a young age, emotional and social development is the most important thing, not so much the "curriculum".

So I would keep doing what youre doing, make sure the staff is loving, attentive to children and understanding.

Ive seen teachers with top notch credentials who I didnt care for, and teachers with less credentials whose heart poured out of them for the children Chat Icon

and your daughter is still so young to be overly concerned about curriculum.

so i think you were on the right track to begin with Chat Icon

ITA!!!!! I think the most important thing is that you and your daughter are comfortable. I may be in the minority but I believe that children are what they are academically. I've seen it time and time again. That doesn't mean that I don't care about curriculum, but I care about other things more. Truth be told, I've looked at a lot of schools and curriculum isn't that different. As long as your talking, reading and interacting with your child, the rest is gravy. How many people of our generation (mine anyway, I'm 41), ever went to pre-school??

My oldest was in a franchised center until the age of 4, we had a great experience. It was a new facility with little or no turnover. But as she was leaving, ownership changed and so did the school. For pre K she went to a very tony private school which was fine but, I wouldn't necessarily recommend. In fact, I didn't put my youngest there.

With my youngest, I went back to work PT when she was a year. Put her into a franchised center in commack and had to pull her out two months later. Thereafter, I enrolled her at a smaller place, that I hadn't heard of but where the turnover was pratically non existent. This place is smaller, the toys and playground are older etc. What I understood the second time, is that none of that matters. The teachers are wonderful. Her 3 year old teacher I would make a member of my family (she has attended her birthday parties and has visited my home). In terms of academics, the teachers have been doing it forever, and know what they are doing. They are also grown ups which, imo, is sometimes hard to find in a franchised situation.

Sorry for being long winded but sometimes you just have to go with your gut. IMO, other then checking the center out with the state, the most important question to ask when visiting a center is "how long have you worked here ??"

Re: spinoff Daycare Question- curriculum?

When we were looking for Alex, we were focused not so much on curriculum, but on the infant center practices, because she was so young.

It was VERY important to me to find a center where the staff interacts with the babies and toddlers and engages them in activities. I have to say, quite a few centers we visited had a line of bouncy seats and swings, and the teachers/staff were chatting away as the babies cooed and played in the bouncy's and swings.

The second I got to our center, I knew it was the place for us - ALL of the babies were out, crawling on the floor and playing with gym mats, toys, and ALL of the staff were on the floor with them interacting with them.

They have a policy at our center of NO swings and NO tv's to encourage interaction and stimulation.

Now that she's in the Toddler program, we are focusing more on what goes on during the day in terms of structure. They have a whole slew of activities, reading time, yoga, gardening, etc.

So, the questions you're going to ask really depend on the age of your child...
