SPINOFF: For those who said they have a decent paying job without a degree...

What job is it? I will be unemployed at the end of Feb and was thinking of changing careers/industries but not sure what I'd be qualified for or what I want to do. I do have a degree but I am fine with working somewhere it is not required. So, how about it - what are the decent paying jobs where no degree is needed?

DH has his own construction company. He is pretty much a jack of all trades and can do almost anything, but his specialities are carpentry and masonry.

He has had jobs that were featured on some of the HGTV shows in the past, and has also done work in several NYC parks.

He really hasn't had any formal training surprisingly. He just can follow other's leads, or look at a design and figure it out in his brain.

It's tough though. He gets most of his work by word of mouth or through other contractors he is friendly with, and really only tries to focus on the bigger jobs or for those with disposable income who want a ton of cosmetic upgrades done to their homes/buildings.

Plus, this is not the kind of work he is going to be physically be able to do forever. He already has some issues with his legs that he just suffers through.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like a good job for now. Maybe when he's older he can just manage his company and have people work for him.

my father owned his own business and when i turned 18 i went to work for him as an accounting assistant.. i more or less reconciled under $100,000 accounts. i also sat in on audits and during tax time.

i stayed in the financial field as AA/EA/Accounting Assistant, seeing i had already years of experience...

i had landed another accounting assistant position for a hedge fund, and within a 2 weeks the Hedge Fund Administrator/CFO was let go.

since it was a small start up hedge fund, i took on all the roles of HFA/CFO. as we grew so did my responsibilities and the next thing you know i was the "CFO" so to speak.

i made 6 figures, but it was far less than what a CFO with a degree would have made.

i know i will probably never get that opportunity again, but i would never want to do it either... the stress and long hours were just too much.

its been 6 years since i last worked corporate and i don't miss it. its all about who you know... my friend got me the interview, she worked for a family fund who were heavily invested in the hedge fund.

i know 3 people, one computers, for apple and 2 construction.
