spinoff from CB (Leah Remini): Why is acceptable???
why is socially acceptable to say "i dont like that person because he/she is a scientologist" and call them freaks and stuff....
but it is NOT ok to say "i dont like that person because he/she is jewish, catholic.... etc" ????? can you imagine if someone said that about a more mainstream religion???
iMO, that is very ignorant and wrong.
very stereotypical.....
i dont know, im just alittle shocked at how judgemental some ppl are towards scientologists.
i dunno, sorry just venting here.
what does everyone else think?
ETA: im not into Scientology myself. just making an observation

Re: spinoff from CB (Leah Remini): Why is acceptable???
I think there is a stigma attached to the religion... people hear Scientology and automatically think Tom Cruise.
I think (and this is not my personal opinion) that some people don't consider it a real religion.

I was thinking the same thing!
Or not even on a religious aspect - if someone said "I dont like Denzel because he's black" that would be lit up in flames in mere seconds.
Just because Tom Cruise is nutty...doesnt mean all Scientologists are like that. Just like all Catholics dont molest little boys or all Jewish people are stingy

Is there any concrete proof for Christianity? Wouldnt some Jews back then have seen it as a cult too?

I agree, but they still exist and that is why people connect Tom Cruise (crazy looney jumping on Oprah's couch actor) to Scientology (crazy looney jumping on Oprah's couch actor's religion).
I also think because it's a fairly new religion that people look at it with a crooked eye and may not take the time to examine what's really behind the religion.
IMO, I think it's a hoax-like and a trend among celebrities (which in my opinion immediatly takes away from it's credibility). JMO!

Re: spinoff from CB (Leah Remini): Why is acceptable???
ok, well if she was in the KKK could I say I didnt like her because of that?
people might call that a religion
religion is a set of beliefs and practices generally held by a human community, involving adherence to codified beliefs and rituals and study of ancestral or cultural traditions and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. (that is from wikipedia).

Re: spinoff from CB (Leah Remini): Why is acceptable???
I didn't know it was socially acceptable to knock a religion as a whole, but I will say that I do knock some of religions' practices and/or beliefs (i.e. the Evangelical Christian's view on evolution, Scientologist's view on medicine).
Maybe it's ignorance or naivete on my part but I need a better explanation than what some religions offer me.

Re: spinoff from CB (Leah Remini): Why is acceptable???
No one is saying it's acceptable - it's an opinion and an opinion doesn't have to be based on fact....it can be a sentiment towards something.
I do not think of scientology as a religion even though it is "classified" as a religion. I think it has similiarities to a cult and like Pork stated, it's based on a science fiction writer and snake-oil salesman. L. Ron Hubbard originally started out selling devices (E-meter) which acted like a lie detector....
A "religion" can be started out easily - all it needs is a few followers and you can apply w/some agency.

"oh so you don't have a REAL religion." Um to me religion is faith, and so basically you are telling me I have a false sense of faith in what I believe - whatever. Seeing as I am better educated & more well-read on a lot of religions than most who are "faithful or devout" it really irritates me.... BUT I have to admit, I have taken a stab at the Scientology beliefs because of some of the things that were in the press lately, mostly thanks to Mr. Cruise, but I do not hate all scientologists, nor do I hate someone because they are a scientologist.

Re: spinoff from CB (Leah Remini): Why is acceptable???
Whether it's a valid religion or not, the reason people are 'allowed' to make fun of it (right now) is because it is still a minor religion. It's not much unlike how minorities have been made fun of in mainstream culture in past history. Since the majority group thinks it's 'funny' or 'crazy' then it's considered to be ok to mock it. In time, if it grows, I'm sure much of the stigmas attached to it will disappear or become more acceptable.

Re: spinoff from CB (Leah Remini): Why is acceptable???
Because it isn't mainstream nor is it accepted as "normal" and most people have a hard time accepting that which is different.
As a non-religious person I have a hard time accepting organized religion but I don't dislike anyone (with the exception of a few fanatics ) b/c of their religious affiliations.

My mom's friend is a Scientologist. She is an absolutely wonderful, caring woman who I've known my entire life. She was told to leave her scientology center because she was undergoing physical therapy because of a stroke.
IMO, pray all you want for God's help but my opinon is God gave your doctor's the intelligence to get you walking again.

How does your mom's friend feel about being asked to leave? I'm sure she was aware that she would be, being that she follows the religion.

She was hurt because while she believed in the philosophy, the power of prayer, etc. She refused to have surgery to correct many medical problems she encountered. However she didn't think that physical therapy (which was a "natural" way to gain mobility back) was included in the doctrine.

That's sad. Does she still follow the religion on her own or is she completely disenchanted from it? (hope she feels better!)

i agree with you about knocking certain beliefs among these religions.... its different then making a generalization on the religion/followers as a whole.

Re: spinoff from CB (Leah Remini): Why is acceptable???
I will readily say "I hate celebrity scientologists" becuase they are putting themselves out there and completley making a spectacle of themselves.
yes, I do believe scientology is a fake, made up religion, that was made up for the sake of making up a religion. Maybe that makes it no different than the jude-christian religions, only that our book has been around a lot longer. But I think the fact that it was made up AS A BET gives it less creedence. Than again, I'm the first one to say that any religion is equally valid
therefore.. I would never discriminate againts someone for their religion. But yes, I might look at someone differently if they can believe in something I consider completely incredible. But if the person is a good person, and not someone who is hateful and spouting BS like Tom Cruise, then on an individual basis I would of course be friends with a scientologist. BUT I cant in general relate to ANY religious fanatics, or people I consider religious fanatics. Some people just freak me right out.
