spinoff from kitchen layout
people are suggesting not having a micro built in to bottom cabinets because of kids.
im just curious, how would it be different than kids being able to open an oven?
just want to be cautious because i have a microwave above, but i also am putting a convection microwave in another part of the kitchen built in to the bottom cabinets.

Re: spinoff from kitchen layout
a family member had this issue years ago when she redid her kitchen. her reasoning behind not putting it low down was because of the radiation - having kids at that level (crawling, walking etc) as opposed to having it on the counter.

Re: spinoff from kitchen layout
I actually think I'm sticking with the microwave drawer in the island. It has a child lock on it so they'd never be able to open it. I've heard great things about it- in fact alot of people say its great for when the kids get older and want to heat up their own food.

I always think they are better higher because of kids. With that saidmyoumcan get the look of a built in using a regular counter top unit with a trim kit. The drawer microwaves are$500+

Re: spinoff from kitchen layout
I have a drawer microwave and have no issues with my kids. I had a 2 and 5 yr old when I redid my kitchen. They know to stand away from it when it's on an not to play with it. Microwave up high is radiation to the head so I don't see the radiation issue being a valid argument. How many times is your child crawling, walking in front of your island while prepping dinner? My kids are in my den while I make dinner. Definitely go with the drawer micro shiv, it's a cool addition

Re: spinoff from kitchen layout
Our oven has a child lock on it so even if DS could open it, he can't turn it on (or the burners). I don't think most microwaves have that. To me that is the major difference between the stove and microwave being in reach of a child.
Also, I've read reviews from people who just say it's a pain to get the food in and out of something that is below waist level and that it is inconvenient (especially if you have any type of back issues or back pain).

Re: spinoff from kitchen layout
My microwave is low - in my island and I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old.
The 3 year old has zero interest in it, and my 1 year old puts tupperware in it, lol, but has no idea how to turn it on.
I don't have a drawer microwave, I have a regular small one that sits right inside a cabinet. My DH's family is very anti-microwave for some reason.
I don't use it too cook major dishes in, we just heat things up in it from time to time, so the small size works just fine for me!
