Spinoff from "super sweet 16" and parents spoiling their kids

I was at the Coach outlet last week and there was a woman there with her 8-9 yr old daughter. the mom was getting help from a sales person, this is what I overheard:

"so I have these 3 bags for her, but I didn't want her to have another black one, so what do you recommend". her daughter was running all over the store with 2 wristlets on her arm. then she goes over to her mom and says "noooooo mooooom I don't want the brown one"

As a high school teacher, in a solidly middle class district, not even an affluent one, I can tell you it has gotten completely out of handChat Icon Chat Icon

This story brings back memories for me... when I was in 6th grade, we had just moved here from Israel. HUGE culture shock. the kids in my new class were jappy little beyotches and made fun of me b/c I didn't have a purse. when I asked them what they put in theirs they said "I don't know... stickers" Chat Icon Chat Icon (I am dating myself... remember smurf and scratch and snifs? lol)

I guess it's just going to get worse Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff from "super sweet 16" and parents spoiling their kids

my little sister (13) got a few Coach things for christmas and her brithday.... but thats because thats what she asked for and she isnt a spoiled brat by ANY means. and she actually is appreciative.
soi dont think just because a ckid has a coach bag makes them a spoiled brat.
im sure alot-if not most are but not all.

DH has a 12 yr old niece in Dallas and we sent her and her mom Coach wristlets for Christmas. (my idea). DH says to me "she won't understand what Coach is"

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight! Chat Icon

we got a call after she opened her gifts and she said "OMG a REAL Coach!! I can't believe it". her mom told us she was in heaven, jumping up and down.

I felt a little bit like an enabler, here I am criticizing kids today about materialistic things while we bought that for her. but it was a $45 wristlet, not a $200 purse.

i hate most designer labels like Coach and stuff so i have no idea what a wristlet is... but that is what i am saying, some kids are really appreciative.

I agree that there is a big difference between the two. A kid that appreciates a $45 wristlet doesn't bother me, but a kid who has 5 $200 bags and is snotty about it makes me wanna Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff from "super sweet 16" and parents spoiling their kids

its scary how a lot of these 12&13 year old girls that I see are so obsessed with the name brands-

It seems that they are all in competition w/ea other to see who has the most coach bags and uggs and the juicy coutures....I dont know how these parents afford it!

I can see limiting it to birthday gifts, but I have some young girls in my family who are so spoiled, that they expect to get a juicy suit every time they go shopping!
What kind of values are the parents instilling in these kids....they will grow up never being satified!
Im so glad I only have boys!

We were brought up, you want it, you pay for it. Can't see spending so much money on a bag!

this drives me nuts, too! i work in an elementary school, and you wouldn't beleive some of the things these kids said they got for christmas! a few of them got cel phones ?!?! and they almost all got Ipods ( even like 2nd graders!
theres one girl in particular who, when i asked her what she wanted for christmas, she said " a fendi bag ( guess coach wasn't good enough!), aTtiffany necklace and bracelet... its crazy that at 10 years old, she knows all these name brands. she also said that her dad has 2 corvettes, one for her and one for her sister for when they can drive!!! nuts!! she also told me that " my dad makes a lot of money, and my mom doesn't work- her job is to shop" Chat Icon Chat Icon
great, what a nice way to raise a kid!

It is rediculous to spend that much money on something just because it has a certain name on it...IMO. I would never spend that much $$ on a coach bag...mostlybecause I went into a coach store just to look around and thought the bags were hideous. While some kids may be appreciative, most kids feel that they are entitled to this. I would never have asked my parents for something like that, especially as a teenager. My dad would of laughed in my face and told me to get a job.

Re: Spinoff from "super sweet 16" and parents spoiling their kids

While I don't agree on spending lots of money on a bag for a child as my daughter has already lost her lunch bag this year! but doesn't everyone remember wanted the Jordache jeans and Sergio Valenti's when they were kids? It's the same thing except the kids today want more expensive things.
My daughter got an ipod for christmas, she is in 3rd grade and I see nothing wrong with it. She is not allowed to take it anyplace without asking first and never to school.

yup, I remember Jordache, Sergio Valente, and Guess jeans. The deal at my house was that at the start of the school year, I got 3 new pairs of jeans (and not the $80 Guess ones). anything more than that, I had to use my babysitting money for.

whatever happened to using the money you earn to buy things?

My parents NEVER bought me anything expensive...I was always taught to work hard and save my money for the things i wanted. IN fact I never knew what Coach was till High School and I bought my own Coach bag with my OWN money.

But by far my fav rich girl story in high school was this one girl who had a new car for every year of HS...the first year she had a benz and got rid of it b/c she didn't like the color...the next year an audi, got ride of that b/c she was bored of it and the next year her parents bought her an Acura...she loved that her parents got her whatever she wanted and didn 't have to work...even one day complained that her parents wanted her to get a summer job Chat Icon Seriously so glad high school is over.

This was my parents especially my mom. I never had anything name brand until I started working on my own. I remember getting my first liz claiborne purse and it was like 5 paychecks. (this was circa 1990). I think about it now and think... I rather have 10 handbags than just one.

When champion was huge... I had asked my mom to try and find me one so I could wear it to homecoming... she couldn't find one at Modell's because we didn't know where to even get a champion sweatshirt. (this was in Patchogue and modell's wasn't like the modell's now. it was like a step below caldor). So i went to homecoming in a brand new hanes navy sweatshirt. Chat Icon

And as for coach.. When I was an assistant manager at Champion... I could buy it at half off and never did. Coach is owned by The sara lee corporation. Sara lee owns champion, hanes, leggs, hanes, bali, kiwi shoe products.... etc. etc.

I had to wait to get Jordache jeans until my parents were able to afford them. I always got things as they were going "out" and something else was "in".

As soon as I was old enough to get a job (15) they made me work, but before then I got things for special occasions only.

I grew up in an upper middle class area so the pocketbook to get when I was in middle school was an IL Bisonte, did anyone else get these?

I recently went to a holiday part at a very ritzy house (DH's friends' parents) and the high school girls there were ridiculously dressed...besides the fact that they were showing soooo much skin in these little dresses, they were almost all wearing Gucci or Prada shoes!!! I was talking to another girl my age and she was like, "oh my god I think I would kill myself if I went to h.s. with these girls)....there is just so much pressure now to have "things"...

Re: Spinoff from "super sweet 16" and parents spoiling their kids

I think I'd be a really depressed teenager if I were one now. Chat Icon I remember pining for Jordahce jeans, and when I got ONE PAIR, it was a big deal. But that's how it was with all of my friends - we did want expensive things, but our parents were wise enough to not indulge us.

Really, it's the parents' fault. These kids will grow up to be some very unhappy adults.

I have to agree that it is the parent's fault. These kids will have it easy their entire lives though.
