Spinoff: Have your parents/IL's saved for their funerals?
I know this is a morbid question, but the support question got me thinking.

My parents have insurance policies and such....My inlaws are a different story. I actually laughed a little when reading your question.
ETA:only laughed, because I am sure they have some elaborate wishes, and would like to be flown back to PR.

Re: Spinoff: Have your parents/IL's saved for their funerals?
My ILs have. My dad is retired from the USAF, so I believe that he can be buried in a military cemetary (like the one in Calverton) for a nominal fee. My mom hasn't been able to save money for that.

My parents told me they want to be cremated and they want us to throw a keg party in their honor.
Other than that, we haven't discussed it!

Re: Spinoff: Have your parents/IL's saved for their funerals?
My parents have paid for their funerals in full already...they have their plots, head stone...and their wishes and reading all on file at the funeral home....neither one is sick or dying any time soon.
MIL has $$ put aside for her funeral.

Both my parents have insurance policies. I honestly don't discuss things like this with my ILs.

I know this is a morbid question, but the support question got me thinking.
My parents have taken care of everything for when the inevitable happens. My DH's mother passed away just after I met my DH. She had been in bad health for a few years and had nothing saved. My DH and his brother had to use a large chunk of their savings to pay for everything. I know it sounds harsh, but I think it was very irresponsible of her.

Re: Spinoff: Have your parents/IL's saved for their funerals?
I read a few of your responses and a few of you have what "I would have written" if I didnt just bury my father. First, my dad was in the vietnam war. He also had a free plot....ya know where...in jersey. Way too far from us (3 hrs). we buried him here. secondly, he was retired had a pension...all that doesnt kick in until AFTER a few weeks Lastly, insurance policies...they do not come right away either. To be honest, my mom said that if she and him didnt have a substantial amount of $ in their acct...they couldnt have afforded his burial. Also, I just got married so I had my gifts to offer if she did not have (which was not the case) When we went to pick out a casket, funeral cost, hospital transportation and everything needed it came to 13,000 dollars. This is not a joke. As true as it was for us, it is true for everyone else. I worked at Brookhaven hospital last year and alot of people went into state cemetarys bc of costs. I think we all need to think and consider the reality to what these costs might be. I would have never guessed anything that I just wrote and I would have thought "it was taken care of".

thanks for your reply. 13000, that is a lot. So I guess you would either need specific savings or a credit card, at least until policies kick in.

Re: Spinoff: Have your parents/IL's saved for their funerals?
They have enough saved for their funerals but nothing is planned or prepaid.
I still remember my dad getting a phone call from someone at Pinelawn suggesting he should pre-pay for his lot. My dad said "If I pre-pay for it, is it completely mine?" The guy said "Yes, of course it's all yours." My dad said "So I can park my boat trailer there?" After stunned silence, the guy stuttered out "I, um, think, um, there may be cemetary rules against that..."

Thank you! I just wanted to add one more thing about funeral expenses that people should realize. Once one parent is deceased there job is notified of course and that income stops until it is readjusted to what the widowed is entitled to. That is another loss toward funeral expenses.

Re: Spinoff: Have your parents/IL's saved for their funerals?
I don't know and as the oldest, maybe I should, but to be honest I am not ready to think about it.
ETA: But knowing my parents, they probably have it taken care of. My father is very good at dealing with money related things and I know they would hate for my brothers and I to deal with the expense even though we would.

Re: Spinoff: Have your parents/IL's saved for their funerals?
I don't knwo about ILs. I know my parents have looked into it, but they haven't actually gone through with purchases of plots. If anything happened, Ihave some savings I could use. My father has always been a saver, so I'm sure there is money for that.
When my Grandmother's brother died, they buried him at St. Charles and she and her sister thought it would be a good idea to buy plots- thinking it would be years before they would be used. My Grandmother buried my Grandfather later that year and her sister buried her husband just 6 months after my Grandfather died. Fortunately they themselves lived another two decades - but it was nice for them to take trips to the cemetary together.

Re: Spinoff: Have your parents/IL's saved for their funerals?
I haven't a clue and don't plan on asking. When the time comes it will be dealt with then. But I do know we have plenty of roomy plots floating around in the family, so everyone is guarenteed a nice spot one day!!!
