Spinoff, if you could be president of this country
what would be the first thing you would accomplish or would want to resolve?

If i could magically accomplish one thing in that one day, I'd try to find a real plan for rebuilding and getting out of iraq.
On a smaller level (this is magic world we're talking about) I'd legalize same sex marriage and insititute universal healthcare and more $$ for education

i agree....
plus...flame me if you want....
ultimately i really don't think the president does much of anything anyway...
I think it is the people behind the scenes that are making all the decisions

I agree. There are sooooo many people in gov't, so many checks and balances, and so much political BS, it is hard to get things done.
However, I think the president has the power to influence the country to think a certain way. He (and maybe one day, she) is perceived to be the leader and in times of crisis, that is who we turn to to get us through (whether they do or not is another issue).
I do think the president can make positive changes (FDR, Johnson. and Nixon in particular were wonderful for positive social changes - yes, Nixon, take a look at what was passed during his presidency).
I'll get flamed but I would like to cut military spending, refocus on youth, education, and universal health care.

I agree with you, that's where the focus should be.

I have to agree w/ Daniela and Neen.
And besides - i don't think I would accept the position of president, even if given the chance.

These are all super-important, IMO. There are so many problems in education and No Child Left Behind seems to be doing more harm than good (at least in urban schools, which is where my experience is.)
I think an excellent leader in any situation knows how to delegate. With a position like POTUS, you really, really, need to know how to choose people. And unfortunately, the President seems to have chosen people based on friendships/favors as opposed to ability (i.e. Michael Brown, and the doctor who recommended prayer for PMS). IMO, putting even one person in the wrong position is too many, with something as important as the running of the country

So appoint the right people for the job? I agree with this.
So after that, feed our hungry, homeless and kids and take care of our elderly.
