Spinoff- Marital Status

What was your marital Status when you purchased your first home??

I found that interesting that some people said they bought their first home when they were single.

I'd be petrified on one income.

ETS: This should include condos, co-ops, whateva. You own it, its your home, your a homeowner.

I checked single (but maybe it shoudl have been other) because I bought my first investment property when i was 23, and then i was engaged when i bought my condo at 26, but I called it off shortly there after, so he was never much of a help with bills, mortgage, downpayment etc.

Re: Spinoff- Marital Status

My DH and I were engaged when we purchased our home. We bought it 4 months before we were married and slept there on the weekends while painting, decorating, furnishing, etc.

I'm so glad we bought when we did (over 8 1/2 years ago). I could NEVER afford to buy a house now in the area where I live. AND, if we sold...wow...we'd make a KILLING!!

Re: Spinoff- Marital Status

I put other because, when my Dad had his stroke I paid off the remainder of the mortgage and own some of his house. I was single.

Somewhat related, I also co-invested in a couple of flips. I didn't live in them but my friend who was doing the work did. I was single.

DH had a house before he met me but we bought our current home a month after getting married.

We started looking when we were engaged and about 2 months from our wedding. However, we didn't find what we wanted till we were married for 6 mths.

Re: Spinoff- Marital Status

I bought my co-op on my own. I closed on it the day after my 24th birthday. Granted - it's a studio, but I was pretty proud of myself (so much so that I'm very sad thinking about moving out). Oh well, I'll get over it ! On to better things..

Re: Spinoff- Marital Status

Well, we found it and went into contract when we were engaged, but closed right after the honeymoon so we were married.

We were married for 6 months when we went to contract, 10-11 months when we closed and finally moved in.

Re: Spinoff- Marital Status

I was very single when I bought my condo but it was only 400 more a month than my rent so it really wasn't too hard to do.

Re: Spinoff- Marital Status

I bought my first home when I was 23 and engaged. Got divorced, sold that and bought my own home while I was single when I was 30. And yes, I was nervous about paying all the bills since this was the top of my price range. But all went well - I am still here, now married and now expanding the house (more bills!!!)

Re: Spinoff- Marital Status

I was like Christine, very single and it wasn't much more than rent for me. Plus I was active duty at the time and used a VA loan (which you can do off active duty too, that was just my status at the time.)

I voted other. My DH and I had been dating 3.5 years when we bought our house together. We didn't get engaged until a few month later, when we were in the house and settled. The risk was all worth it! I can't imagine being able to afford a house later on, we hit it when the prices were still reasonable (2000).

Re: Spinoff- Marital Status

I was single, but it was in the early 1980's in the midwest - the whole purchase price was only $49,900 for a nice, small 2 bedroom on a 1/4 acre - my payments were only $360 a month including taxes.

Re: Spinoff- Marital Status

I was single when I bought my condo. I met DH shortly after I purchased, but before closing, so he helped me move in, but he had no financial input for bills/mortgage anything for the condo.
