Spinoff of Heather's post regarding carsets..

I was driving on the LIE on Friday and I drove past a woman driving in the HOV lane with a little child in a front facing booster as well as an infant seat facing forward!Chat Icon

I wish I was a cop, I wanted to be able to pull her over.

I wish there was something I could have done, is there something I could do?Chat Icon

I don't know how and if they would respond, but you could call the cops.

I am a mandated reporter inside and out of the classroom, I would have tried my darndest to alert someone. That is a clear case of endangering the welfare of a minor if you ask me.

Honestly, I was considering it. It was a Friday afternoon, there are a ton of cops on the LIE at that time, but I didn't know if it was right to do, I should have though.

Its amazing. I have a picture of the day my parent's brought me home from the hospital and I was tucked in my mother's arms safely - they didn't use car seats. Then again, back in the 70s, people weren't driving like idiots and the rates of injuries and infant mortality from car accidents was not like it is today.

As a teacher, it is part of my license to have been trained in child abuse detection and prevention. Teachers cannot be certified to teach without that training. If I see any indication that a child is being abused or neglected, I am mandated to report it even if it is not within the confines of my classroom. I think anyone who works with children who holds a license may have this same requirement.

When I told him about the incident he told me that the next time he sees her doing something like that he is obligated by law to report the incident (those might not be his exact words but you get the idea)...I just didnt understand exactly how that worked. He is a Special Ed teacher..arent you too?

Re: Spinoff of Heather's post regarding carsets..

People are idiots and apparently she couldn't read the manual that says never put the infant seat forward facing.

You could call, but they probably wouldn't do anything. I've posted this before, but I saw a woman driving down North Ocean with an infant seat in her lap. I called the police, they asked if *I* wanted to press charges and when I said no, they said there was nothing they could do. How could *I* have pressed charges against someone that didn't do something to me? Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff of Heather's post regarding carsets..

This may be a bit more helpful:

MANDATED REPORTERS

"The law also assigns civil and criminal liability to those professionals who do not comply with their mandated reporter responsibilities."

That line above would make me liable if I do not report and it is found that I was aware of the situation. I think these laws may have become more prominent after the entire Lisa Steinberg story came out in the 80s. This is why I report every bump and scratch that I see. I won't put my licenses on the line for anything - I woked too hard for them.

Actually, I stand corrected for myself. I am required to report within my own professional capacity and not when I am not on duty - according to the professional responsibilities. I just don't know if I could ignore it/
