spinoff of my finger food thread...
When do people start giving their child whole foods.. like french fries for instance...
I still cut everything up- but am wondering when he will be able to hold the french fry and eat it....
For all I know he could do it now... but Im too scared to find out...
Is there an avg age???
I could give him a pickle spear (after removing the seeds) but I know his teeth cant break through the skin... so he wont get any chunks off...just little pieces of the "meat"

I actually started doing that this week because Emily is giving a hard time with eating things so I wanted to see if this would help since she loves biting on wagon wheels and toast and stuff like that.
So far I've given her chunks of chicken (about 1.5 inch long, 1 inch wide) and chunks of grilled cheese sandwiches about the same size, and she does fine with them, I just make sure I'm watching her, like usual, for big chunks.

I'll give him whole pieces of toast and french fries and stuff like that. Stuff that is thicker or messier, I still cut up, but not nearly as small as I used to.

I started at 12 months or so teaching DS how to bite down on something and break it in half (like a cracker or cookie). I would hold it helf in his mouth so he could do this.

I think it depends on each child. DD is 2 and loves to shove things into her mouth. I still cut her toast/grilled cheese into tiny pieces otherwise she would shove half the sandwich in her mouth.
