I've heard it's because the baby is still young and has very little motor control... and the walker enables him to zip around the home at warp speed... sort of like a car careening out of control Chat Icon

it gets even worse when stairs and tall objects that can topple enter the equation Chat Icon

then again, I have no walker experience, so all I know is hearsay

Same. But change the "she" to a "he"Chat Icon

Christopher didn't use his for all that long either, so I didn't worry about it hindering development.

Didnt use a walker until she was much older and learning to walk. my younger sister had issues with walking on tippy-toes..her babysitter probably left her in it too long and it affected her walking the pediatrician suspects. As she got older her walking developed properly. This and the stairs we decided not to use with our kiddies and they turned out fine--especially younger DD--she is speedy..almost too fast.

Re: Spinoff of sorts... Why are walkers unsafe?

\there are a few reasons - first as PPs said, there is the issue of making an infant mobile and having them topple down stairs. There is also the hip issue. The other developmental reason is that babies are unable to see their feet in them, and do not equate what they are doing with their legs with the resultant movement. As a result it delays walking (or at least that is what the studies say).

Personally we didn't use that OR an exersaucer (basically a walker that doesn't move)

I used one and DS loved it....obviously not something they should be in all the time, as with any toy, but it allowed DS to have the independence to explore prior to being mobile - would use it again in a heartbeat.

I didn't use a walker with my DS and wll not with my DD for the same reasons. Are exarsaucers also bad for development? If so, I did not know. I used one with my DS. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Used one for DS and he loved it. Will be using the same one for DD when the time comes.

DD#2 has a hip issue and the Pediatric Orthapedic told me that even with a hip issue, as long as they are not HANGING(the feet touch the floor) in the excersaucer or the walker they are fine for SHORT periods of time(15 minutes or so)

I agree and DS walked before he was 11 months old so no delay there.

I will say that when DS was 10 months old he was very strong and started throwing himself backwards when he got mad. One day he was on the threshold of the kitchen and entry and nearly flipped himself. So as with anything you have to watch them and be sure they are in a safe environment.

ETA: I never got the developmental issue argument with walkers ONLY because exersaucers are the same set up only without wheels. So if you dont want to use a walker for DEVELOPMENTAL issues, you probably shouldnt use an exersaucer either.

I did not allow my son to use one...however I will be the first to say that I have no criticism over their use if a parent so decides what-so-ever and in fact I think that the kiddies are adorable in them! Chat Icon

But for my personal choice I decided against it...not for the accidents...those happen regardless...it was for the developmental reasons. I did not see the point in having a walker and as DS's PT pointed out...no one walks sitting down (even if your child tries to stand they cannot help but be positioned in at least a semi-seated position).

So in the end I said no walker but he did have the exersaucer. It was a huge help for his torticollis....go figure.

It concerns me that the walker was banned in Canada...for the same reasons that it concerns parents that BPA products were banned...at the end of the day it's your call.

Re: Spinoff of sorts... Why are walkers unsafe?

I found the newer walkers just stunk! My mom and dad kept the one from when my siblings and I were a baby.. the old school metal one. My sister used with her kids and I just used with my dd and she LOVED it!! We only put in for a short amt of time each day b/c of the hip development, but I do believe this helped her walking.. once we started using she became more confident in her ability to walk.. and walked on her own shortly after. We did keep a very very close eye on her tho.. b/c of stairs or other dangers that she would encounter while in.

I think it's a safety issue when children are unsupervised. I plan using one with my DS.

They have been banned in Canada because they can tip even while supervised.
