Spinoff on electric cars - disposal of batteries

I never see any kind of talk on the disposal of the batteries.

They will eventually die. I mean they are not "eternal".

How come I never hear of how we are going to process the disposal of them?

I mean those are poluting batteries.

Discuss!!!!

Lithium ion batteries are what we use in cell phones, laptops and tons of other things... they are dangerous to the environment if not disposed of properly like anything else, but they can be recycled.... I think that it is safer compared to what gasoline does to the environment.

Yes, I am not saying I think gas is better.

But I have never heard so far on a plan to dispose of those batteries.

I know you can recycle them because I send a big box of batteries in every month from my husbands business.. however, I don't know what the environmental impact of the recycling process is, I'd have to research it

Since most electric car batteries use one of the existing technologies, I would imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to ramp up a few facilities to handle all of the batteries that will be disposed of when the car batteries reach the end of their lives. Hopefully someone has been thinking about this already, and has some plans in the works....

Re: Spinoff on electric cars - disposal of batteries

DH is a mechanic and works on a line of cars that offers a hybrid model or two. His shop is a dealership, and like oil disposal they have EPA and OSHA regulated recycling units. I am sure that the more available these cars become, the larger the efforts will be to ensure that properly turned in batteries will be recycled.
