spinoff regarding nut/food allergy

I am just wondering because I do not personally know anyone with food allergies - but how did you find out that you were allergic to nuts, seafood, or other foods? Did you just find out from trying to eat that food & you became ill?

Re: spinoff regarding nut/food allergy

For me I found out by touching the food (shrimp in particular).

I never even ate shrimp (sorry they just look gross to me) but I was cleaning them to make a recipe for my boyfriend at the time. My hands and arms immediately broke out in major hives.

To this day, if I even kiss my husband after he eats shellfish, my mouth will start to itch and I will get a hive or 2 on my lip.

My cousin found out that his son had bad food allergies when he was an infant. He was HORRIBLY colicky and the doctors decided to allergy test him. He was allergic to dairy and wheat. You have NO idea how many foods contain dairy and wheat until you can't have ANYTHING with dair or wheat... Luckily, by about 4 or 5 years old, he outgrew the allergies and can now eat most things.

I am glad he is OK now, but this is why they usually don't do allergy testing on children under 2, they are unreliable.
