Spinoff, Sorta: Settle an Argument re: Proposing
At what point during the proposal process does the boy ask the girl's parents for permission?
I say it's right before or within a few weeks of asking the girl.
DH says it's before you buy the ring in case they say no.
This has come up cause of the other post and he asked me if I would have changed anything about his proposal.. I said no- it was great, but I wish I was more surprised. He had asked my parents for permission in Nov- before Thanksgiving, then we didn't get engaged til March 5th!!
I told him it was so long to wait- that I was always expecting it, or thinking at times he didn't want to marry me cause I couldn't understand what was taking so freakin long!!!
His response- that I am a headcase.. I stil think I am right though-- like my parents were going to say no!

Re: Spinoff, Sorta: Settle an Argument re: Proposing
my fh asked my dad about a week before he asked me. he already had the ring, i think its more of a formality now, not really actually asking for permission, more letting the family know you are about to get engaged.

IMO it really has nothing to do with buying a ring.
Asking for ones hand in marriage is a sign of respect to a father...not a decision that is given to him

Re: Spinoff, Sorta: Settle an Argument re: Proposing
randy - you tell your dh to shush!! permission should be asked a few weeks/days before the big question is popped.
any man who asks the parents permission and the parents say No - and does NOT ask for the woman's hand in marriage ANYWAY, is a whimp!

I agree with you - a week or a few days before the actual proposal. Several months is way too long. And what if they said no? He wouldn't have married you then??

i agree. Buttt, i also think that if DH had any doubt in my dad giving his approval, then he might not have asked him
DH asked my dad the same day (called him in the morning, popped the question at dinnertime)

Re: Spinoff, Sorta: Settle an Argument re: Proposing
Man, do I love to be right!
For the record, I don't think DH thought my parents would say no.. I just think he didn't know what to do first-- I think he got excited and wanted to ask them, then it took him a long time to find a ring-- regardless, I knew he asked them and I was like sitting around waiting.. tick tock tick tock.. he should have asked when he had a definite timeline in place.
Then a couple days before he popped the question- my mom told me to get a manicure. I didn't need to be Nancy Drew to figure that one out!

I agree. Actually I knew that we were going to get engaged and asked DH to ask my Dad out of respect for him. As I've mentioned before my Dad is disabled and homebound (partially paralyzed and can't speak conversationally) and I wanted him to feel respected and important in the process. DH was still so nervous even though my Dad is probably the only Dad who didn't have the ability to ask him 20 questions .
Funny, my Dad can get quite emotional since his stroke so I tipped him off that I "thought" DH was going to ask him so he wouldn't cry in front of DH and get embarrassed. I'm not sure if I ever told DH I tipped my Dad off.
