Spinoff: Tenure Question for Teachers
Do you think if your tenure was extended by a year would you stay or leave?

Re: Spinoff: Tenure Question for Teachers
That's what my friend is wondering. She was told she has until January to improve. That's when the principal is going to tell her if she's going to be recommended or not. She doesn't know if she should just resign.

Re: Spinoff: Tenure Question for Teachers
That's something I have been thinking about a lot this year- being it's my first year and, in my building, it's pretty common to not grant tenure after the three years. My first reaction would be to leave, but in all reality, I don't know if I would want to take the chance of leaving then not being able to get another job. I would probably just have to swallow my pride and stick it out.

Re: Spinoff: Tenure Question for Teachers
I think it depends on how common of a practice it is. If I was one of a bunch, I probably wouldn't take it so personally and would stay. But if I was the first person it happened to - I would me mortified and probably leave.

Re: Spinoff: Tenure Question for Teachers
Depends on the situation. You can usually see the writing on the wall (based of your reviews) if the situation seems to be going from bad to worse. You can always be looking for a new job during the extra year. Just remember that tenure would take another 2-3 years if you went somewhere else so it may be in your best interest to stick it out.

In my district (specifically in my dept) they've been known to get rid of people after two!! It's my first year there too!

We were also told that even if we receive all positive evaluations, they could still let us go- so much for TTC before my tenure year!

Oh absolutely - we were pretty much told doesn't matter if the evals are positive - can be let go at anytime for any reason or for NO reason at all!

Re: Spinoff: Tenure Question for Teachers
With this job market? Totally stay. That being said, I work in a private school where there is NO tenure, so I guess that influences my decision.

Rach - do you have any sort of job security - or since there's no tenure - they could let anyone go at anytime?
