Spinoff to Birthday party themes...
Okay, color me stupid.
But why do you need a theme for a Birthday Party? I could never figure this one out.

Re: Spinoff to Birthday party themes...
I don't know...Kate's 1st b-day theme was a luau, which was more for me than her--I always wanted a luau Her 2nd was Sesame Street because she was/is obsessed with Elmo and Ernie and I wanted to make her happy. She was SO excited about her "Wowo Nernie" birthday party and that made me excited!
Abby's 1st is on May 8 and we're doing a theme--either a Cinco de Mayo or a Harry Truman (don't ask , but they share a b-day)--again, for us not for her. When she's 2, I'm sure she'll have an interest in her own thing and I'll have a theme accordingly.

Re: Spinoff to Birthday party themes...
When they are really young and couldn't care less, I just feel it's easier to coordinate with a "theme" in mind.
When they get older, they definitely have "favorite things/ shows/ interests" that are fun to incorporate into a party theme. I'll never forget my son's face when Blue from Blue's Clues came to his 2nd birthday. We are celebrating his 6th birthday next month and we are having a "Spongebob" theme as per his request. We are surprising him with a visit from Spongebob at his party. He will be thrilled.
I think it just gives the party a more cohesive feel.
Is it necessary...no.
Is it frowned upon if there is a party without a theme...no.
Will my kids always have "themed" parties...probably yes! But that's just me.

For me...I agree. It makes it easier for ME to put it all together if I have a theme.

I don't think you NEED a theme. We really didn't have one unless you count the balloon type decorations that I got at the dollar store!

I agree. Also as they get older, they love picking what kind of party they want.
I'm not a theme person but for my kids I am. I do a theme based around where we're having the party, ie Joseph had it at the Planetarium so I had him in a spaceship on the invite, favors were astronaut ice cream. It just made sense to me.
My wedding theme was, I'm getting married, come & have fun."
