Spinoff to crossing fingers

Are you superstitious? What superstitions do you believe in? What do you follow w/o believing?

I think crazy people come out on friday the 13th and full moons, but it could be placebo effect.

I wouldb't really want to walk under a ladder or break a mirror, but I LOVE black cats.

Also, I get really upset if someone mentions "the scosttish play", even if they're not in the theatre. And I also uphold the "no whistling rule" not really out of susperstition, but because I hate the sound of whistling!

Also, I don't believe in congratulating something before it happens, or ..like my cousin signed her baby shower thank yous from herself, DH and the unborn baby. I have no problem with baby showers, but to sign it from the unborn baby was weird to me. I also don't think I would name a baby before it was born. Maybe in my mind, but I don't think I would tell anyone.

I'm with you on the baby thing. Some people take it further and until the baby is born, it isn't really existing. Whatever floats your boat.

I always put my right shoe on first, my right foot is the first to touch the floor in the morning, first to get out of the shower, etc.
I always knock on wood, bite my tongue and knock on my head if no wood is around.

I wear coins in my shoe on new years and I don't do any chores on new years day for the belief that what you do on new years day is what you'll do all year round. This year, I've found it to be true.

I don't walk under a ladder, I don't cross my knife and fork on a plate. I'm weird.

My biggest superstition is that I do not share pictures with people if I am looking directly into the camera.

I always say "Rabbit Rabbit" on the first of each month. First thing I say out loud - it's supposed to be good luck.

I make wishes at 11:11.

I always knock on wood when I'm saying something I hope happens (or doesn't happen).

Personal superstition, I cannot fly without Jellybeans. I need to have them. The first time I ever got on a plane someone gave them to me and I feel like the plane will crash without them. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to crossing fingers

I have a bunch of superstitions based on my religion and some that I thought were based in my religion but apprently are not. I have yet to be able to distinguish between some of them.

When I moved out of my parents home and to subsequent homes, I would not sleep in my home until and unless it hada mezzuzah on at least the front door if not my bedroom. (I have one on the door to our apartment, the bedroom, the kitchen and the living room - when we have a child, there will be one on the baby's room)

No knives given or used at showers of any kind. (I don't think that one is religious)

When we have kids, nothing for the baby will enter my home until the baby is born and safe. I know many Jewish people feel the same way. If we are given gifts, they will stay in my mother's home. A layette will have been ordered but not delivered and someone will wash it before we get home. This seemed to work for every baby born in my family to date. At most, we will paint a nursery but thats it.

More with babies and religion. There will be a red ribbon tied to the baby's crib. "Red ribbons or kinehora bindels (to keep away the evil eye) were placed in the cribs of newborn babies to protect them from evil. Years ago this folk custom arose when childbirth was a tricky proposition and infant mortality was high. Today many well educated people still believe in this superstition. You will find red ribbons in carriages and sometimes sewn on the babies underclothing."

Thats about it for me.

I am not a superstious persona at all. I am always putting my poketbook on the floor and my mom and my friends are always getting on me for that. They believe that putting your pocketbook on the floor will make you poor and I am like whatever. I really do not believe those stuff.
