Spinoff to dm24angel's (Donna's) post
Which was great advice, BTW, but does the same go for diapers? Get newborn size as opposed to size 1? I am trying to stock up on a few and everyone is telling me that since she may be big (I was a big baby and my family has big babies) that I should get size 1.
Will she be swimming in them??

DS was in the newborn size for the first 2 weeks - at 5-6 diapers a day.
He was born 8 pounds 9 ounces, but they quickly lose weight and have to gain it back again - especially if you are planning to BF, that can take a couple of weeks.
We bought a few different packs of newborn diapers and kept the receipts - that way we could return them when he outgrew them.
We also found out that we hated a couple of the brands out there (Target ones were crap!) so we were glad we hadn't stocked up on too much of one kind.

i thought i should add diapers to my registery, but i've heard that different brands work better for boys and girls. since we don't know what we are having, we don't want to be stuck. i thnk i have one package of diapers on my registry now.

I didn't necessarily agree with the NB sized clothing advice. My DD was 8'10 when she was born and was in NB diapers for like 10 days--luckily I attended a friend's baby shower around that time and used the remaining ones as filler in a gift basket. She has been in size TWO..believe it or not, since around 4 weeks.
As far as the clothing, she is 7 weeks now and is in 0-3. She was wearing newborn, again, for like 10 days. The same was true for my DD #1 who was 7lbs. 6 oz at birth...she got a bit more use out of the NB stuff, but not that much where you'd need to "stock up."
As far as the diapers, get one package of NB to be on the safe side, if they fit, you can always go out and buy more when necessary.

ITA 100%...except Gianna was in NB diapers for about a month.
I don't own 1 thing in Newborn size we did just fine and got lots more use out of 0-3.
ETA: Gianna was 7lbs 2oz's at birth 19.5 inches long too.

As I've said before, DS is still in his NB clothes at 8 weeks and he is probably 10-11 lbs now. The target brand (Circo) runs a little big IMO.
As for newborn diapers, he wore them until about 6 weeks old. They still fit him, but he was leaking through, so I went to size 1.

I had a 9 lb 3 oz, 20 1/2 inch baby and stocked up on 1s and 0-3. I don't know how, but she was in NB size diapers for a month and luckily we had some NB clothes. Sh wore them for the first 2-3weeks.I wouldn't say stock up but have some on hand just in case (steal from the hospital ) I look at pics of her in NB size and still can't believe she fit in them with room to spare. Maybe it's the way she's proportioned?

I guess it depends on the baby. Noah is a little over 8 lbs right now and the newborn diapers are too big on him. The swaddlers fit great. The size 1's are HUGE on him( and they say they start at 8 lbs!)
His size 0-3 cloths say 7lbs + but even his newborn stuff is too big on him.
He is like I said over 8 lbs and 21 inches.
So, i think babies are shaped different..

I don't know if you should stock up too much. Seems every baby is different, but they all change sizes pretty fast!

My DD was put in size 1 diapers at the hospital, she never used any newborn diapers. Just get one pack of newborn size, and if you need them, get them after baby is born -- or buy them from somewhere with a good exchange policy!

My 3 lb 8 oz son was in size 1's from the start in the NICU. We never used the premies or the newborns. You can roll the diapers if theya re too big, but if they are too small, they are useless and those tiny diapers hold nothing!

Baby G is still in swaddler newborns & is JUST starting to get a little snug on him. He was born 6lbs 10oz, and is now 8 lbs 2 oz. I tried to put him in the Huggies newborn (someone bought them for me) and he leaked out of them.
