Spinoff to Favorite wine
Ok...this is going to sound completely dumb...but how do you decide which wine to pick? I have never been a drinker...but DH always asks me why I don't try some wine (that is before I became preggo). I went to the liquor store with him...and it's so overwelming on how many choices there are I got annoyed and left.
So, did you all go to wineries or tastings or something?
Signed...cluess about wine

I waitressed a lot so I got to sample wines all the time. But you can also go to the Wine Spectator's website and get reviews there. Just try a new wine every now and then and eventually you'll find one that you love!

Re: Spinoff to Favorite wine
There are a few ways on how I decide what to buy:
#1 Easiest Way - ask the store clerk. Most employees are knowledgable about the products they sell. The liquor store I go to is old friends with my neighbor and I have become friendly with him. He'll suggest different wines and talk about their taste, body, depth, etc. He'll also ask what the occassion is for, who will be drinking it, etc ...
#2 Ask friends and family who enjoy wine. Ask them why they like particular wines
#3 Try, Try, Try and write down ones you like - include winery, name of wine and year for reference.
Every drinker has different tastes - some like fruity flavors, some like smooth tasting, some like sharp biting wines. It's really trial and error and be open to new tastes.

I've gone to tastings. I also have a very helpful book that tells which wine to choose according to the food that you are having or if you just want a glass of wine.

Re: Spinoff to Favorite wine
I will often ask the wait person what he/she recommends with what we are ordering, if I don't already know what I want. We've been to wineries here, in SPain, Napa, Portugal, and Chile, and to wine pairings at Viking. But it all comes down to what YOU like. Some restaurants will give you a tasting if you can't decide which wine you want -- West End Cafe has done this for me a few times.

Re: Spinoff to Favorite wine
trial & error. After sampling..you'll see you'll become partial to a particular region or type(Merlot, etc) Nothing compliments a meal like a good glass of wine. yummmmmmmm

Re: Spinoff to Favorite wine
Dh and I just try different reds. We go to the wine store and wander until something catches our eye. We have a $20 rule. We aren't allowed to spend more then $20 on a wine that we don't know we like or that doesn't come highly recommended. We keep a journal of what we have had and rate it on a scale of 1-5 for taste and body.

Re: Spinoff to Favorite wine
we look for wines with a high score at a moderate price...like a bottle that scores an 88 by Wine Spectator that's $12 or $15 is something we might try...

Re: Spinoff to Favorite wine
I either ask the clerk. Or, I look on the back to see what the tones of flavor are. I like woodsey flavors where DH likes sweet. So, we decide on that.
Or, we just get it and hope it's good. if it is, we will buy again, if not, we will drink that bottle and never get it again. I always say, you can't really taste it after the first glass anyway

I do this too and then try to remember what I have had that I liked.

Sampling is the best way, imo...I also will try any red's (I prefer red to white) rated 90 and above from Wine Spectator's.

These are the best ways
I was the same way - I had NO idea. My DH worked in a Wine and Liquor store (actually he was the manager for many many years), he would come home with wine and we would try them. Everyone I know asks him. He has been in the business now for over 15 years, and now he is a wine salesman.
