spinoff to fragile X post
What test do you get that tests for this? i know the nuchal is for downs and the afp is for spinal bifida.

I don't think they normally test for it unless you have a family history of mental retardation or other disorders. After I had my 1st trimester screening the genetic counselor asked if I wanted to be tested for Fragile X since I have a brother with a learning disability. I opted not to be and it was never even suggested to me with my 1st pregnancy.

To check the baby they do an amnio or a CVS since it is a genetic issue.
To test the mother to see if she is a carrier it is a blood test. I don't know if they test everyone or just if circumstances warrant it. Like if there is a family history of fragile x, mental retardation or premature menopause.

They did a blood test on me to see if I was a carrier when they did all the other basic genetic screens and I had no family history,etc.
